I'm only bringing up options, and try to list the positives and negatives.
The toyota 8in is a good option, but there are others as well. Since this is a topic about the Volvo 1030 and 1031 rear ends, I thought I would add some information to it. Since I DO have direct experience with Volvo 240s and modifying them, and driving them harder than grandma. The comment about "the 4.1 being okay", is true. Yeah, the gearing+trans combo sucks. But at least the car is out there going sideways and having fun

Actually it is a thread about getting an inexpensive but strong axle that allows for future options on GEARING for cheap. Eric knows the EARLY axle will take the common and cheap gear sets , and he knows the late won't.. He stumbled onto the car.. With the funny gears 1041 costing millions and really only available across the ocean, that axle is out... He knows there are options...We talk on the phone frequently---how do you think he did such a nice job on the cage? We talked about all this including the bullshit on TB with guys---who have not stuck in a Ford 8.8 ----screaming that it is easier..... Ever heard the phrase that begins "tooo many cooks...."? We talked about finding early axles--they crush 'em from rust up there and any remaining are in the hands of hoarder-pervs--so out of the question locally.. He's getting advice about building a rally car----stronger but now a tank, trust that alternatives have been brought up and shot down.... Why do you think I push the idea so vigorously? Because it has been figured out as the BEST and EASIEST option all things considered. subaru Part number : 38100 AB681 https://www.subarupartsdepot.com/oem-subaru-parts.html part number for rear : 38104AA440 ; 38104AA130 ... hard to tell exactly from the diagram which part number or numbers you need. i think just the first one. but i'm not certain. i got mine from a pick and pull. found an automatic legacy, unbolted the drive shaft and pulled out the half shaft and i spun the input and watched the outputs go round was really close to 4.5 :1 so i figured it was a 4.44 
currently $286.62 and you would need a rear $72.98 from a reno pick and pull on a full price day. not as cheap as a RWD / Volvo but not horrible either. wish i would have done this back when i was a 1.8 with a 3.90 FD ..
