winter rally suspention set up.
January 27, 2015 10:18AM
The car is a 2280 lb Mark 2 GTI. It seams my gravel setup totally sucks in winter and I lost my farfegnugen, right now 250 lb linear springs in the front of the car. In my opinion this is to stiff for winter rally and the car feels skiddish and not planted. I was thinking I must soften it up because the stock stuff seams a lot better than my gravel setup on snow and ice. my question is about trying a variable rate spring like a 175-350. or should I try a softer linear rate spring such as a 175 or a 200 rate spring? thoughts anyone?

Yeah winter conditions means softening up front and rear both springs and dampers....
The oil in modern shocks and struts is very very thin but it still gets thicker as temps go down. If its good damping at normal 40* to 90* range it will be too stiff at 20* or lower.

So yes maybe softer springs, maybe 185 or maybe max 200 front, and maybe 125 rear but also softer damping..
If as much smarter people have said that on gravel the problem is finding grip , and on asphalt its handling, then the problem of finding grip is even higher priority on snow...
And we find grip by shifting weight around with the gas and brakes and the steering wheel...

Didn't you say you'd been doing a lotta ice racing on lakes?
What did you use there?

Hey I sent you a PM about getting email bounced back, look at your PMs

John, we use stock stuff for ice racing and we remove sway bars also, but that is on a smooth lake. No jumps gullies, ditches, rocks, oh you know. K

well jumps and gullies are a small % of what we do...so get those sways off--even for gravel..

REAL small %, specially if we can't stay on the road!.

I gotta run to the bank and then pick up some aluminum, we oughtter do a revision to the stuff you got to make it better-er, and same time MORE TRAVEL, But for COLD snow, maybe FRESH-ish OEM + some sorta springs,, no sways f or rear

Send me you damn email so i see where I misstyped it..

For softer event (snow, ice, mud, sand) I typically run my 1-way adjustable hotbits on a very soft setting. For the rougher stuff I put the JVABs back in.
