I know of two such swaps. One turbo 2.0, one N/A 2.2. Both were a bitch, particularly the oil pan. Very tall engine, gotta notch the firewall too.

I prepped one oil pan for a friend's 2.2 swap, the other one got built from scratch (turbo version) by a shop and cost $1000 to build. I spent 8 hours fabricating/modifying and TIG welding the stock pan. It barely clears the rack and pinion.

That's the impression that I got when I was poking around under the hood. Opel did not design the chassis well for engines from 40 years in the future...

So if you have to cut and notch and fab and stuff, go 13B winking smiley It's just as much work but you get big heaps of cheap power, probably build a super kick ass engine with the stuff lying around in the garage and small parts that would cost less than a pair of cams for anything you'd care to wedge under the hood.

what are some options for a proper rally-use limited-slip, locker, welded, etc ....

+ , I want to keep the driveline as Opel as possible,
so I do not want a BMW rear-end or such frankenberry sheite going on, not on this car,
at this time

I also do not want to pay twice the price for a diff just because it says 'OPEL Motorsports Official Diff' or has der Fatherland number plate, or Hans Stuck spit on it or whatever..

I just want as much traction and 2wd going on as I can get for a reasonable price. I realize I'm not going to get this done for $99.99 but I'm not going to spend 1500 just for a diff either.

what say ye ? Kaaz? Tru-Trac ? Isuzu ?

All the new Opel specific LSD's I've seen are $1300 or so. That includes Quaife, ZF, and Gripper. If you look on eBay.de you can find OEM LSD's from Manta B's (typically 25% or 40% locking) but they can be rebuilt and upgraded. Most common in the street cars were the ones to fit 3.44 gears. If you go numerically higher gearing there was a different flange thickness differential, but a 4 mm ring gear spacer will do the trick for less $$.

Lincoln locker works for cheap but is a bit of a pain on tarmac.

ok, have you personally (or anyone else) used something from the " ~ $1300 crowd" you listed ?

I have never heard of Lincoln- I will look at that.

I am ( maybe Even too ? ) building (gathering bits) for my Manta A to be period correctish stage rally car... so a little of everything.

I want : much more suited to gravel/dirt/rallycross, but transit stages .. ,
throwing on slicks or sticky rubber for a hillclimb or trackday,
or the occasional local autocross-shakedown/testing..
* doesn't require 12 hours of swapping things around under the car..

I'm exxagerating but I thinka yu katcha me drifta

cheers
JB

I have a Quaife for a street car. Not known to be good for gravel. A few friends of mine road race with the Quaife as well.

I've used plenty of ZF's in road racing and roundy-round racing as well as street. Everything from 25% up to 80% locking. 80% ZF in a street car is a pretty dedicated understeerer unless you set up up correctly. But it's got bite.

I've never tried the Gripper but a friend of mine has one in his GT. He's making 150-ish HP so he needs it. Especially with the GT's crappy rear bite (worse geometry than the Manta).

Lol...Lincoln-locker is a welded differential. I have a ton of experience running a welded diff in circle track Opels, as well as road race and hillclimb Opels. Takes some setup work to make 'em turn but it's consistent and cheap.

My prefered method lately is to just weld in a 1/4" plate on either side of the spider gears. Easier than trying to weld hardened steel to cast iron. I just use stainless filler rod. I've done a lot of these over the past couple of years for local shop that builds drift cars. No weld failures to date.

Lincoln locker is from:

In Sweden---where Opels ruled the roost for almost 20 years---before Volvo 240s took over---its called "ESAB diff"

In Rally-paradise aka Finland its Kempi diff

Now sorry but I have to ax whenever i see this weird "I want it to be period correct-ish"

But what period and for who?

I see this almost always from people who in malheursement have no idea what people were doing elsewhere in any time period much less 3040 years ago.. One dipshit Doctor--a gynecologist or proctologist was taking it on himself to write rules from his proposed SCCA Vintage class and throws this "period correct" stuff out (all the while neglecting to mention that his personal Datsun 510 had a 2.4 liter bottom end that wasn't made till 20 years after the car---probably a Republican judging from his one set of rules for everybody else and he's exempt)

But is it what a Gynocologist "thinks" was do-able back then---or a guy who cross references things like me and who knows guys who were active in development and moddiing rally cars back then where the sport is a mass sport?

anyway, thank you Bob. I sincerely appreciate your advise.

I guess if you don't buy parts from someone, then you are not worthy of asking questions... I've bought and received nice Opel parts from Bob before for my build... Hell he even gave me some stuff because he took interest in my project when I respectfully asked for his help.

Evan, I hope you are getting all this great advise for your Manta and use it to the fullest..

pm me if you wish .. I feel unwelcome in this thread.

Lighten up?

No need to, all this is light.. You think anybody can take this shit seriously...

You lighten up.
There was a good point --period correct for WHO?

No jabs at you. It was what some people call "a question"..

All questions do not mean that somebody is attacking YOU, ever hear of the concept?
That was a question too...You recognise questions by the curleyque thing at the end that looks like this ?

You see in conversations people ask questions, that how they get to know people...
You are taking EVEYTHING as if it is a challenge---a dare and that everything is DEBATE and you basically accuse me of "taking shit too serious"..

What the fuck?

You ever talk to people? How do you talk?
