Old Mustang Mental Masturbation

So, have the possibility of picking up a '66 mustang cheap. V8 but not hi-po. Notchback. These cars have some stage rally provenance in the 60s.

So, trying to figure out how to make one stage worthy. Would want to convert to rack and pinion.
Specifically in the suspension department what can be done to make it bulletproof and long travel? Idea would be to put in more modern and viable suspension. What could be done with something like this in the front? http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/fcoc-fd.html



Assume some type of long link 4link with watts link or panhard can be done in the rear.

I didn't do the reading, but that looks like about 80 mm of travel...

edit; now I did the reading, but it didn't say how much you get. I've been looking at a 67 mustang a friend is building for track duty and am alarmed by how little suspension travel he will have, but I know nothing about track cars.

I second the volvo 240 subframe, make the jump to rack and pinion, macpherson struts and it comes with decent vented discs for one trip to the pick'n'pull

So, how do you make it 200mm. Or 250mm? Obviously a longer shock body may work, but will the geometry support longer travel with a longer coilover assembly?

With these types of systems aren't you usually limited by the range of motion of the ball joints?

I like the more modern front suspension idea but converting to a strut design is going to require some serious changes to add support to the top of the strut.

What about grafting in some sort of baja style front suspension? Or just a truck front suspension like a modern ranger? Something like the torsen bar setup from a new Ranger?

why not use mono balls and heims in stead of ball joints?
this might be over kill but the concept is the same

I was just curious what '60's Mustang shells looked like and found this. It's a '68, not sure if anything changed since '66, but thought it might be useful:

'64-66 is based on the Falcon chassis and they're a bit smaller especially in the engine bay, even a 289 is a pain in the ass to work around and 351Ws tend to be negative-clearance with the shock towers.

'68 is based on the Fairlane chassis, a bit bigger all around than the Falcon cars, same basic steering/suspension geometry though (read: crappy and weak). Heck, I converted a Fairlane to disk brakes with '70 Mustang parts one time.

I forget where '67 lies.

If nubby would repost, that would be great. Plan would be to build it with a better suspension and drivetrain, but classic looks. 107" wheelbase and 2500 lbs. nothing extraneous, just fun.

Done. And I did it as an attachment so it's not lost to the sands of time.

So no self proclaimed experts...
Like I liooked at the results of Vatanen and Blomqvist doing 2nd and 3rd at 1000 Lakes 1987 against the "untouchable" Lancia hordes and thought damn, we can do that spec car and labored under a misapprehension for more than 20 years that Sierra was a good platform for us low-lifes....

But Hurst explained clearly that they were junk and quote "No forward grip at all" and expained whatever success they had (dozens on national Chapionship rounds both gravel and Tarmac all accross the world, numerous 2nds and 3rd) was "only reason they did anything was because of the powerful motor...

That's the sorta guys you need...

No forward grip and only successful because of powerful motor.

I can't come up with advice that good....

OK spread of gearbox ratios--look at Y160 Toyota box--skip first--those are excellent rations for a n.a. car
