RETURN the Wavetrac ASAP if you can. If not, sell it to someone not doing rally. Reports are that they only last a couple events between rebuilds.

What needs rebuilding? If the clutch plates go, wouldn't they just revert to being a regular torsen?

Yes, exactly.

Having already wasted many thousands of dollars on just barely acceptable gearbox bits for VWs over the past 15 years, I would certainly never advise someone to buy a Wavetrac or other torsen when Kaaz and Gripper units are readily available at comparable pricing.

I'm also curious about this. The new version of the Wavetrac also incorporates a locker, which sounds neat if it can actually be abused.

Yup. BUt they have proven that they are NOT that neat for rally.

So, why pay $900 for a wavetrack when you can buy a Kaaz for $50 more or buy a custom built package from Gripper (you can select ramp angles, preload, etc) for a couple hundred more.

Even if they were twice the price, they would pay for themselves the first time you had to pull the trans and pay someone to rebuild it for you.

Me too, Robert.

I'm happy to try new stuff especially if there is limited experience in the market with it.
Sure, it may end up being a dissappointment, but we wont know until we give it ago.

Thanks everyone for the reccommendations on other diffs. I suppose the backup transmission can always have a slightly different setup for sure.

Here is the thing. They already are a disappointment to all who have tried them in rally. You trying one isn't going to magically make them better. Why throw away thousands of dollars??

Yes, I think we will do it the way you mentioned Gord Olsen does his rear mounts.

...and yes, sorry for the mis-quote SHORTER final drive.

With Euro near parity to US Dollar, these are now a bargain.

Buy a Kaaz or Gripper clutch-type diff.

I told him Gripper...there are design features that make it a much better design than Kaaz and after purchase service--which is non-existent at KAAZ USA---can't be any worse...

We gotta do a sticky parts list so that for example guys don't buy 4.2 final drive and spend the money to install because 4.2 just barely compensates for taller knobbie tires, and for a real improvement we want something shorter....even if it costs a bit more cause then its an actual performance improvement...so "get 4.67" instead

Agree, a sticky would be useful to avoid dumb VW mistakes.

Interestingly, there seem to be more good options for VW's of the mk2-mk3 vintage now than there were 10-15 years ago when I started doing this. Then, there were Quaife & Peloquin and VW Motorsports stuff from Gemini (then Ricardo) and Drenth which had both stopped supporting the line so only used-up second hand bits were available.

For example, the MTS gear kits are a no-brainer right now. For $1400 you get motorsports ratios and stronger gears without the need for replacing the final drive at all. They have gears that work well for 3.67, 3.89, and 3.94 final drives. Bonus, if you use the 3.67 final drive, you get a useful first gear with 41mph at 7300rpm with a 62cm tire. Second gear drop is still huge even with the close-ratio 2.12 gear found in the 16v boxes But, who cares, you only make that shift once or twice per stage on average.

I agree on the gripper too. It is a better design for sure and service is great at least until Tom & Marylin Seal decide to stop making them. Kaaz is like comcast level of service.

Gripper is the way to go. The exchange rate makes them a bargin.

The Kaaz design isn't that great and dealing with them is an absolute pain in the ass!

For gods sake get a rally scrutineer involved with your cage builder before any tubes are welded!!!

... not specifically in rally.

I would recommend that before they start on the cage, that you make arrangements for your local RallyBC scrutineer meet with you and your cage builder to discuss what sort of things he/she will be looking for when it comes to logbooking your car.

In addition, it would be beneficial to speak to other mk3 owners for advice on what they like and don't like about their cars. Eric Grochowski, Matt Bobyn, Al Dantes Jr, Dave Cyr, Matthieu Laberge-Gagné, David Bérubé, all have/had mk3's.

Yeah, very nice. Only thing I'd do differtent---because decades ago I did that on the back of my Saab---is I'd Sawz-all an angle cut on the unused side just so its easier to drop the rubber/poly cusions and the top washer and start the nut with an open side that doing that down in the hole so to speak..(In my car I have to reach in and under the old parcel shelf which is now 1/32" aluminum... and its some damn M10x 1 fine thread thang---pain in the ass and not fast...that is the very reason I make my VW top pins a big hefty M12 and give them M12 x 1.75 so its more fool-er-er-proof.)
