Another Civic suspension thread (or who wants to build mine?)

I need to find someone/someplace to do up a set of 6 BilsteinHDs. Need springs too. Kinda like "Here are my numbers, here are the units, make it work well please." Shootin' for Mendocino mid July, might be a bit too soon for turn around. If I make it, great if not I'll find another to run. 96-00' EKs up front and 97-00 CRV in the rear. Will be extending the rear turrets. Going to get sprung/unsprung weight #s this weekend.

Anyone local-ish to San Francisco that does good work? Do I dare poke JVL? Do I send 'em to BilsteinUS?

Worked real well..right up to when he backed the car off the road on a sweep right at Idaho

As far as finding someone to do the actual revalving (if I'm not mistaken, John sends his to Bilstein for the actual valving work?), there's lots of shops that work on Bilstein. I'm guessing BilsteinUSA might be one of the closer options to you anyways. Maybe contact Bret at Yawsport to see who he'd recommend?

What he reccomended to me when searching for something for a Suzuki 1300 GTI was "these grat Honda shocks...they out of production but there's 4 sets. They have (about) 2.7" travel and can be blah blah....."
The advice was politely put outrageously bad..
1) shock out of production---what's the poor bastid going to do in future??
2) 2.7" travel for a SoCal rally car?? In that application---and he said he'd supplied rears for a guy in the bay area with a Geo which uses the same thing----the travel is like 1;1 so this car would have like 2.7 to 3" travel....

Then; price. these out of production things would cost nearly $340 each..

Shockingly bad advice...

The poor bastid with the Geo had gotten "sterling" advice on making his own front struts...the guy started with the normal short travel---155mm--VW units everybody gets...they are valved 300/100... They cost whatever...
The guy got advice, had them revalved to some insane stiff valving that would be FAR in EXCESS of tarmac settings for a 1230kg Ford Escort Cosworth GpA car...

too bad the car weighs 1000 lbs less...

I seriously am shaking my head just remembering...The poor guy ended up with a horrible short stiff front set up and with buying the stuff new and revalving was broke.

The correct answer would have been to just go the normal 40 insert--190 travel and valved maybe 260/70 and machine the top.
That would have been SAME overall length but travel 190mm vs 155mm...

And I daily deal with the results of the way the 50mm sets were designed and marketed..

No. Cannot condone recommending that...

Bad advice, no thought to owner"living with' the car in future, much higher costs. and Honestly flat BEEEE Zare valving...

Sorry if it wasn't clear, but I was suggesting asking him for places to do the work, ie. "I want the valving to be XYW/QZ, here's some $$$, make it so".

If you don't already know the valving that you want, then whomever is advising you on valving and spring rates (I hear JVL "knows a guy" ) will probably point you in the direction of their preferred shop to do the actual work.



Eric, curious on your choice to go with the CRV rears. The EG rears (F4-B46-1605-H2) seem like they should have enough travel for just about anything:

Talked with Bret, said to send 'em to BilsteinUSA in Poway, CA. Also said could be a month maybe two.

Runnin' ITR LCAs so the eyelet is kind of a thing. Bought a pair, pulled one apart many years ago thinking I'd get around to figuring out how to revalve/rebuild it. Converting tape measure inches to mm: 511mm compressed w/o bump, 64mm bumper, 647.7mm extended. Total travel w/o bumper 136.5mm, with 76mm internal spacing.

Is only .25" shorter travel than stock ITR and 3.75" longer body with 3" of spacing inside.

Ah, the eyelet LCAs will do it. Although (and I know it's probably hindsight) at the point where you're extending the towers, I'd be thinking about going to one of the "standard" Bilsteins with rod ends and ditching the pin mount completely.
