Found a needle in the VW Haystack

Thats awesome! I'm jealous. With the power steering, the pump hangs low but with a good skid plate we've never had an issue. We're running the serp belt setup which I think is easier to change on the side of the road, but again never had an issue. I've looked in to an electric pump, but came to the conclusion the money was better spent elsewhere.

That said, we regularly boil over the fluid. Tried many types and additives but nothing really held up. Not an issue, but messy. I have a small cooler but have yet to put it on...

If your hoses are routed well and not flopping all over cut the rubber jacket off to let the heat escape. That stainless braid will cut through just about anything.
I know for some more of these Pepsi cars, somehow they wound up at a Heavy Truck wrecker in Calgary.

Your PS pumps makes 75 bar pressure at idle..
That makes things hot.

The other thing with the pully driven pump is that likely it's spinning 3 times the average speed it would for "normal" driving if not more.
Perhaps underdriving it might be beneficial, I doubt you ever felt under-assisted.
Now back to the electric idea, you have to think of all the power wasted in heat to boil the PS fluid in a few KMs, it's robbing horsepower all the time.
I ditched mine on my Jetta one day when I popped the belt, was like a new machine.
Next day hit up a buddies boneyard and went to a 3 pulley setup, not spinning a dead AC compressor and a big ole hydraulic pump made a world of difference.
The other issue is that as speeds increase the need for assistance dwindles, and with a pulley driven pump the opposite occurs.

I'll be a guinea pig with an electric pump, not sure how the motor will hold up, thinking old school oil filter finned cooler and bigges possible supply wires.

Oh itäs been done already. Derek bottle did some Subie thang. I think it worked. Loadsa Escort guys have been stickin in Vauxhaul Nova column in for a decade now..

Bushore has been running an electric hydraulic pump for a long time. I don't think he's ever had an issue.

I was gifted an electric pump from somebody here. I still need to get it on when I put my car together.

Picked up a currently plated B3 16V Passat for $350. I'll be driving it home on next set of days off!
Next to get the Golf stripped and off to be caged.

MicroSquirt and ITBs it is....Just have to decide if its custom mounted bike throttles or a storebought setup....Thoughts from anyone thats done either?

Looked into....

Not worth the hassle or $$ in my opinion. ITBs are a lot of mechanical contraptioning hanging out in a very dirty, dusty,muddy, and otherwise inhospitable environment.

VWMS managed 220hp with stock bore & stroke geometry and without ITBs using the 52mm runner intake manifold from the ABF 16v. Their ITB'd setup made 250hp and had significantly re-engineered geometry to go along with the 8500+rpm design (short stroke, wider bore).

Why make it complicated? Intake manifolds available on ebay for $100. Whole motors with wiring harness, ECU, and manifolds imported from Europe run under $1500 sitting on the ground in the US.

I have a 2l 16V already, was tossing around the idea of doing an ABF clone prior to buying a plated, runnin driving B3 Passat for $350, kind redirected me.

ITBs aren't a must, just more of something I'd like to do, or possibly a set of Yoshimura Keihin FCRs.

As for the MicroSquirt that's just from working with it, the utter simplicity and tuneability as I do things over time no need to get another chip reflash.

Honestly anything around 200 would be awesome but I'm betting 190 ish is attainable without going into exotic stuff, keeping the revs around 7500.

Gearbox gonna be the money, those shifter setups that are available now are pretty appealing too.
