The 3.94 in 16V trim might be a better option for me with the 1.26 fifth, either or will work just would not have to spin 8k plus to get to 110 target top speed,

Need to find a 3.94(super rare AFIK) or a 4.20 R&P in the 16V shaft size, there's no OEM variations so it's VWMS or nothing. I do have an 8V 3.94, would have to find out if an 8V 1.43 4th would mesh with a 16V 4th. Not sure who's pattern MTS work off for their stuff.

Do you have the gearset in your hands yet? Check the size of 4th gear. I think the 16v VWMS gearset used a 16v input shaft, but an 8v sized output (pinion) shaft. I suspect they did this to simplify mixing and matching final drives. You may actually be able to use your 8v R&P!

I'm not an expert, so don't take my word for it. Take some measurements of the splines on 4th gear before you buy a final drive.

Never mix and match mated gears though.

You will need a 16v case though to accommodate the larger 16v input shaft. You will also need to clearance the case big time to fit those gears. You will definitely need a LOT of patience. My biggest piece of advice is to do a test assembly with used circlips, seals, bearings and 5th gear bolt as you go, and only once you're satisfied that everything fits without interference tear it all down and reassemble with the good new circlips and bearings. Trust me.

Pay careful attention to the clearance between 2nd and 3rd gear. You may need to shim the large input shaft ball bearing so they don't interfere (there is an OEM shim for this).

Hopefully that is the case, would make life a lot simpler, would only need a diff then.
I have a 16V 2Y and a diesel ACH with the 3.94 FD.
Did you machine the trans case or clearance it with a die grinder?
I would definitely do a dry run.

I used a dremel to clearance the case. If I had to do it again I would probably use a milling machine, but the dremel worked fine.
