I'm sure you've been talking to John about the differences, but you realize that the GM and Ford versions have different length input shafts? Last time I talked to G-Force, they were only making the GM 26-spline input shaft, but i think you can use their gearsets with a standard Ford 10-spline shaft, it's just not made of straight-cut unobtainium or whatever they use.

A big concern I would have is that dogboxes get abused, even in street cars, and probably moreso by Camaro/Mustang guys with huge motors.

Don't know how the length difference affects a BMW, but it causes some trouble in the Volvos.

so you are saying if i were to ever go with some coolio gforce
straight cuts i would need to have the 26 spline. good
b/c this looks like one to me.

?tion, which was has the shorter input?
i am moding a bmw bell and clutch to make this work.

Alex if you're making a one off bellhousing it doesn't matter which T5 you use, it's a piddly difference anyway.
And listen, I drove extremely close ratio dog boxes from 1968-1993 in every moto-cross bike I owned, hell! the "wide-ratio" gears in enduro boxes were closer than any car stuff I've seen so we can asssume I like quick changing close boxes,
BUT!!!!

I was in classes with ususlly 30 35 guys all breathing down your neck at each race for each corner.

You don't need the guaranteed hasssle of a dog box, especially if the ratios are the same as the synchro box.
Truth is get a set of ratios real close like in my Saab, they slide in synchro or not.

Get that base box and have fun.

Hey in a little threadjack, I's building some suspension for some BMW boys we have up here in the PNW, and they have a 2002, and they sent me a sample strut and its disgustingly weenier than weenie.
You've been putzing with these damn things for years now, and I've been saying "Check out one or 2 steps up in BMWs range to find things sized good enough "
Like in this case spindle and wheel bearings bigger than bicycle sized..

What do you know that we can bolt in to have a stronger spindle??? (and still be 4 bolt cause they have a pile of wheels).

I don't remember the exact numbers, but the 26-spline GM is longer. I think it's like under an inch's worth of difference between the two.

You may be able to use a G-Force gearset with the Ford 10-spline, the back of the input shaft may be the same on both. But I don't know for sure, since I never got that far into it when I was putting a T5 in my car. I ended up just going with a new Ford Racing T5 -- it's a great box with good racing ratios (other than 5th) and the price wasn't bad, considering it was new, and a bunch of folks had already developed parts for the conversion in the Volvo community.

Good luck with the build -- if you're continuing with a 2002, you ought to look up the old Byford/Olson 2002 that ran in CRS. I saw it for sale at Laughlin about 3 years ago but haven't seen it raced since 2002 or so. Cheers.

Re: CAREFUL ON THIS T5!!

RallySmurf,
The GM T5's like this one have the shifter position set back many inches further back than the T5's used for Mustangs, and it also has a longer tail housing. This may put it way out of the right shifter position for you. If you are following a conversion plan that has been laid out by others for your car, then stick with the basic model type; if the conversion uses a pre-'94 Mustang trannie then a Camaro trannie will be too long, and a Mustang trannie will be too short if the conversion calls for a Camaro T5.

If you are doing this from scratch, then BEFORE you buy any T5, figure the overall of the input shaft from the pilot bushing to find where the front of the trannie housing will be, then figure out where the shifter will end up. For a shorter foreign car, you may need a combined version; we are planning a Chevy S10 output housing (with the S10 cover and shorter shifter shafts) on a Mustang trannie to get things where we want them in our Opel!

Don't worry; you can get the 2.95 gear set first but you will be hard pressed to get it for this price unless you can indeed use the Camaro unit; but, the length of those GM T5's is very problematic in shorter sedans, as mentioned above.

If you have question, feel free to ask; we have been doing a lot of T5 research.

I would ask G-Force about the length and pilot diameter of the input shaft before assuming is was the same as the GM input shaft. And the 94-95 T5's for Ford Mustangs are a longer input shaft than the 85-93 World Class T5's. Shifter was in the same position so the longer shaft may or may not work better in that regard.

BTW, Brick, there is a .80 overdrive gearset available for the Ford T5's. Check here: http://www.5speeds.com/t5/s80.html

I assume it would work on the G-Force main shaft, which I am assuming has the same gear splines at the stock part, but again, check it out first.

You don't have to do anything to the power windows; carry a window breaker (which you should do for any rally car). If you put in the manual regulators, then watch the position of the handles relative to the sidebars, othey migth become unusable. In that case, the electrics would be better!

yes from scratch. the 2.95 gears can swap to any case
right? still might be a good deal to get. if to long
i'll find a short case.

i had to cancel my bid for now, b/c he says it WC which
has the 3.* first. but i asked him to count the rev in 1st
and said it was 2.95,...................so something it up.
from this bearing pic it confirms its a world class.

http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2005/12/T5Rebuild/images/WCorNWC_tp.jpg
If you have aren't sure whether or not you have a World Class T5, the quickest external check is to look at the counter-shaft bearing cup, just below the bearing retainer. It it is of the roller bearing type, with Timken engravings (left) you have a WC T5.

Dude, I think Mark might be a little off on the differences in length.
I have a Chev and Ford T5 right over there, I'll measure some stuff after dinner.

i mesured my bmw's @ around 28'' shifter to bell face.

here is says the t5 camaro is 28.36, so it looks like i NEED
a camaros length.
http://www.ddperformance.com/images/t5dia.jpg

thanks for the warning though, i needed to confirme this.
i had done it once but that was with the 2002, its 2'' shorter

OK good; that IS pretty long in the BMW; it's like 13-14 inches in the Opel! Didn't mean to scare you but T5's do vary quite a bit per the chart John posted. If you can use the Camaro direct, then you can get a lower cost one from eBay or even rebuilt with the 2.95 1st gear. That was standard in a lot of the Camaro boxes but I think they only showed up for Mustangs in the special racing boxes; the difference you are seeing from some data to the ratio the seller gave you may be the diff between the V8 and V6 versions......
