Pressing out caliper bosses on AP's
April 27, 2016 01:06PM
I need to remove the steel caliper mounting bosses so I can machine down their overall height. Any ideas on how to get them out? I can get them to twist a little but no luck removing them.

Maybe a quick call to Essex?

I actually talked to them this morning before posting. They didn't know how people remove them, just that I should use a little locktite when I reinsert them.

I was thinking that a tapered drift on a press should work, might give that a try.

Paulinho says, "he will have to heat up the caliper to about 400 max 450 not to kill the modulus in aluminium and then try pressing them. They are an interference fit so in order not to damage anything has to be like that. Cooking oven does well if he can use an IR gun to get temps"

I ended up using a small handheld torch and applying heat directly to the bosses, then twisting them until they came out. stupid simple....

took about .217 off the height of the bosses and the calipers just clear the wheels now without spacers!

Most wrc stuff is pretty tight too. And peddles dont really get in there, they just bounce off, its the mud that acts like a grinder. But since its on the front, there's no danger. Mine are just as tight and after 5 years they're still kewl.

Yeah yeah whad evar..way back in 1992 I bought a buncha stuff like a bitchin 16v Saab head, insanely bitchin slide throttle and mainfold for a 16v Cosworth, some calipers 2" twin pot like Group 4 Escort used in the rear and assorted other trinkets from this guy here:

When I went to pick the stuff up in Jan 1993 between season opener Monte Carlo and 2nd round in Sweden, I stayed for a couple of relaxed days there in Canterbury where he owns the local Saab dealership and hung out in the shop for two days.. When we were digging around for all stuff he dragged out a couple YUUUUUUUUUGE boxes FULL of AP calipers and he saw me slathering and touching myself, ya know...So he said "if ya got room you can take all of those you can...but every one is there for a reason.."
I asked "like what?"
He said "oh maybe a rock dinged a cross over pipe, or a bleed sized and was twisted off but most is rocks or just sand getting carried up by the wheel and skeeeeet erk one lousy groove up the back and you have a leak...BUT if you have time you could go thru them and pull them apart and assemble them again all fresh and minty"
I asked why din't he just get one of the local louts to do it and he pointed to the car and said Oh they're one of my sponsors, I just give 'em a bell and the said over another load of 'em".

Just 2 notes: he was on rallycross tracks, far far less rocky than we see especially in the PNW
And he had easily 3 times the space..

But that's a long time ago, design and materials and technology has changed so that means its old news, not applicable to todays condition..

(I was in a rented Vauxhaul Nova so I could even bring even a pair back...Should stayed a day and sent home the who 2 boxes..I lurv good brakes---and the were ALL right piston and disc width...Dang.confused smiley
