Is setting the timing really THAT bad? My buddy took his Jetta to a "qualified mechanic" and I don't know the details of it well but I know he was pretty pissed off LOL

So I decided to try and swap the other motor in and get it running. I would need a shop crane to yank the motor out right? Would the 2 ton one from harbor freight work alright or is there a more quality option for a reasonable price?

The HF 2 ton'er is a great engine hoist. The added reach over the smaller one can be a huge benefit.
You might be able to find one on CL for less than half price.

A come-along hung overhead in rafters or a A frame or if God holds it up works FINE

This

I prefer them when working alone, just figure out how the ratchet thing works for up and for down--most geniuses never figure out down..

I've definitely done it with a chain hoist around a set of rafters before. Works well if your floor is gravel.

I still prefer the ease of the hydraulic engine hoist when doing it alone.
Volvo engine and trans basically fall in by themselves once you pull the front end off.

What do you expect to be "cheap"?

The last one I bought was $800 and it needed work.

What happened to those magic $200 gearboxes I kept hearing about? Guess John V really is a liar. Might just have to find an M47 (I can't afford power anyways and I'll just mitigate the shit gear ratios with hella clutch kicks)

Chilling at harbor freight rn. Anyone have experience with a worm gear hand winch? I guess the internet says it's a come along that is nice and smooth, no clicks. I was gonna buy a engine crane but I'm going for that MickeyD's swap yo.

The cheap boxes are the 4 cylinder junk (4:1 1st gear, wide ratio drops) that are weaker than the Volvo box. If you're going to go T5, the only way to fly is a V8 T5. (3.15 1st gear, 2.95 for Chevy) Although the '94-up V6 Mustang maybe has a strong enough trans, but they also have a longer input shaft that you may have to take into account. '93-up Chevy T5 are actually Ford units.

You know what? I hook you up. I know a dude in Michigan who has a Chevy T5 for remarkable cheap, if a Chevy T5 meets your needs. I don't know which one you need for a Volvo swap.

Either will work. Ford you get a deeworks adapter, also available from yoshifab. Chevy you get Johns modified bellhousing. I was about to say the ford/ deeworks adapter is cheaper but the guy changed his pricing to usd since I bought mine (he is canadian based) so now the difference is negligible.

Could be that things have gone up in price as time rolls on for a decade while everybody is flogging the log...

Supra diffs used to go for $75..

Actually wait do you think a T5 could fit in a Toyota Matrix?

EDIT: If it's a good enough deal and I can't get it shipped for reasonably cheap I will find a way to drag that bitch back to NY
