So Patrick, are you happy with how the Volvo is performing?

Mostly yes! Very happy.

For reliability concerns I ran only 5 psi. It's enough to have fun. Stuff won't break. But I'm bumping it up mostly for the sake of being able to charge up inclines, that was the only part where it needed a little more go.

The brakes need more work. I ran the rally with power assist. The pedal was half mushy and pretty unpredictable. I corrected the notes in recce to compensate for this and knocked a lot of turns down where there was a good amount of slowing to do. Eventually I obviously figured out brakes are not super important, but when preparing for anything that was a 2 or even a 3 I felt like I was never able to get it slowed down as smoothly or accurately as I would have liked which was a bummer because I felt like if I had a more predictable pedal I could have got the car set way better for the turn.

I've been driving it on the street without the vacuum hose to the booster hooked up. Obviously, the pedal is no longer mush but I'm still not huge on how it feels [has nothing to do with leg effort, just seems really hard to get them to lock up] and I am really thinking of deleting the booster and the factory master, and putting a balance bar with dual brake masters in it's place.

Handling wise I don't want to change a thing. It felt totally fine, maybe a bit stiff, but I have other changes I want to work on before I fiddle with anything in this department.

I felt like getting pretty damn close to my podium my first rally and finishing all but 1 stage is a good start. Without the first rally jitters out of the way, more trust in the car, a little more power and the brakes sorted Tour De Forest will go very well.

I have seen quite a few posts over the years here where Rally drivers don’t seem to be big fans of power brakes.

No matter the car.

I wonder how many drivers here retain their power brakes?

Also you mentioned the suspension feels a little stiff. I forget -what suspension are you running?

I'm running borrowed JVAB coilovers (50mm bilstein strut), #300 front spring. They work good, just seems pretty stiff.

Rear is almost entirely stock except for heim jointed/adjustable rods. Gabriel Ultra shocks and stock 240T springs.

I don't want to play with any of this until I get the brakes to work the way I like, for now it is fine.

You probably want to sink that spring rate in front down a few steps.

Try 225...and at some point maybe those struts might be revalved (or at least somebody look and see if they're anywhere near 300/100 ---its been 10-12 years--I can't remember everything.
