Lateral half roll bar placement
July 09, 2019 08:27AM
The FIA rules state the lateral half roll bar:
"The pillar of a front rollbar (or the front pillar of a lateral rollbar or of
a half‐rollbar) must follow the windscreen pillars as close as possible"
but then it seems very difficult to get access to the baseplate/floorpad/mounting foot to weld. I have seen many A pillar bars go to the front of the door opening.
Thoughts? Preferences?

Late reply, but it's time for my semi annual check in I guess.

Can't you put a bend in near the base of the windshield that would put the bar near the door opening? welding can be a bit tough but it can be manageable.

It seems that the compromise is to take the bar down the front of the door opening, but this inherently doesn't follow the A-pillar toward the base of the windshield. I can see why most everyone does it though, so it can welded. I took tons of photos at SOFR and 80% of the cars had the front lateral intersecting the car at the front of the door opening.

i guess You mean it's hard to weld the plate and then weld tube to that plate
because there's not much space left in between inner rocker panel and said tube to access with welder nozzle
easier to do with tig of course and some put them on boxes.
I'd squeeze front laterals by ratchet strap as much as possible to create some space between rocker panel and the tube, weld tube to plate first, release strap and then weld the plates to the floor

I understand what you are describing, but I don't think that will work with each half lateral having three door bars and an A pillar reinforcement bar and a bar to the front strut. Easier to move the half lateral so it lands on the plate just inside the door opening. or I can cut the sheet metal in front of the door hinges, then reweld them closed after all my connections are made.
