This site started because I like what Sailing Anarchy has done in the sailing world so I pointed out how we could do the same in rally. It is a direct copy of Scott Tempersta's vision and efforts.

Jens sometimes you have good ideas and sometimes you do not, just like everyone else.

I rather like your posts and think it is funny how everyone feels they need to respond to them because they are so hurt by what you say. I think it is better to let them stand by them selves where they can show you be the ecentric that you appear to be. So as far as I am concerned pls keep posting. When I do not like what you write, I can easily skip a post.

I enjoy this site, and appreciate it's helpful nature. It seems like a real community, possibly the way Rally used to me ?

I did receive a recent PM from Jens that I appreciated. Just goes to show you that eventhough stereotypes abound, just a little effort goes a long way.

Darn this really was a good topic at the start.

Skye- I can't see why an electric oil gauge wouldn't work. As long as the threads for the sensor or capulary tube match the port on the rail. Or just mount a gauge on the rail and an idiot light on the dash for low pressure.

Well the interesting thing is in looking inside works cars was as sparse as instruments were, right there was a fuel pressure guage. Thewy leave out a lot of things but included that.
I think I might put the sender back by the pumps and the "Inspection port".
But remember Ford is running really high boost (2 bar boost, 3 bar total) and it really wants fuel exactly right.
You 2wd guys are running stock motors, maybe the T-bird vam when we get the plumbing right.
I think its a little less critical to have a permanent mounted sender and guage.

Set it up with the junk taped on and the Wide band meter taped on and pull it off.

Now that's interesting to me. I had originally bought just about every gauge available to mount in the Subaru (I fabbed up a 6 gauge pod for the dash), then chatting with Steve Mcnaughton (Ralph K's crew chief) he just about laughed!

What should I be looking at mounting in the car? I have a fuel pressure gauge, voltmeter, Exhaust gas temp gauge, boost gauge, oil temp, water temp available to use.
I know the modern cars have the fancy Pectel style Cray supercomputer digital dashboard displays that tell you what time to get up and when your Roast Beef is done - but I don't need to play Playstation while driving!

As far as water temp, the stock cold/warm/hot is good enough IMO, don't need to know exact temps.

In my first rally car I had gadges. Turned out I like to look at them from time to time. That was slow. Esp. when I looked and saw something not so good like is the turbo making boost, or is the temp high...

Now I have a low oil pressure light - that is it. I am much faster. It is not like I am going to stop anyway till the car will go no farther.

Jens is right we now run sprint events. There is no time to spend trying to trouble shoot, it works or it dont. If you pull over you lost the rally so do not pull over.

I mean what will you do with low fuel pressure reading? If the car runs keep going if not stop. Do you carry a spare pump, Filter etc?

I have a gadge in the service van so if we make it back there we can test. Same for voltage meeter, and temp things.

Yup, I just copied Ford Motorsport.

I'd rather DNF with broken alternator, water pump, etc than DNF with blown engine. Pulling over is pulling over, the difference is how much $$ it will take to get it running again.

So you really going to look at that gadge and say look it is low flip the switch?

That is slow, if the car misses you will say hmm try the other pump, that is not so slow and do not require gadge.

Ever so slightly lean is a problem, big time lean is not a problem because there is not energy to make too much heat.

IF you must have a gadge get egt or mixture. Fuel pressure no tell you anything. The recording EGT is good so you can see max heat on a stage. But again I would bet if pressure goes down a little then the ECU will go, look too lean at the OX senssore and hold open the injector longer. How else would the ecu deal with dif mix of fuel with difrent specific gravity and dif temp of the fuel etc?

All fuel pressure will do is scare you and slow you down.

derek, I don't have enough background to have any opinion on more or less guages, but aren't you running a carburated xflow motor in your mk2? You could pour sand in the intake of that thing and all it would spit out the back are glass marbles.

Get EGT.

Preferably a digital one.

If you want to have a fuel pressure gauge too, that's fine just put it under the hood. You have NO TIME to look at it when you are in a stage.

I wasn't planning on looking at it on a stage, only if the engine is misbehaving. I have a superbright red LED idiot light for oil pressure, that's the only thing I'll notice. I'll look into EGT. Would like to do a temporary wideband O2 for tuning at some point.
