I hereby propose we use Peugeot Optional Offset Part---->POOP. Which leads right into phrases like "Dude I hear you got the new shit on your car" or "I got new suspension and now the car goes like stink" Any and all suggestions are welcome. The current clamps have a 63.5mm ID on the clamp and a 52.2mm OD on the stub that goes into the knuckle. |

Seriously Rabin. Why bother with the stock nonsense when you can get something proper that will work, give you a bit more travel, and not make you worry about your suspension everytime you come across some rough stuff. I've seen enough guys do just that. Try to run stock suspension because they 'think' it will work okay. They end up having to do something else quite quickly, because it just doesn't make sense to have to keep buying or rebuilding the stock crap. Plus with the Bilstein stuff like JVAB does, your dampening is what it should be. I have yet to meet anyone not happy with their JVAB stuff and every person that rode in my car was superbly impressed with it. And everyone else is on DMS.

Thanks for the compliments Grant, but remember the real credit has to go to Ford for being nice enough to publish 20 years of spring and damper settings for both gravel and tarmac from the great MkII Escort to the World rally Car Escort Cosworth. Without that we'd be relying on whatever soem alleged genius in where-ever says is cool and have no way to extrapolate. Well Grant - the first thing is that Peugeot suspensions are LEGENDARY for their strength, and for their ride over rough terrain. (There's a reason they're still the shit in Africa even to this day) Ask someone in the know and they'll back me up.
I've spoken to Mad Mike Halley about this, and he too said that the modded stock suspension was unreal in stage rally in the 80's back when the stages were actually rough. The Peugeot's were known to have a distict advantage due to the suspension. I've also gotten some VERY useful rally specs (sworn to secrecy) from Thanos Kardyas in Greece whose currently running Woondner's old 504 coupe rally car, as well as a 504 sedan in Greece - and doing REALLY well. (Beats an alarming number of newer machines!) Now Thanos is running custom Bilsteins in the 504 coupe - but the sedan is still running modded stock components and it's doing quite well indeed. So I have a proven recipe of spring rates and mods to do to the stock suspension that work for him... If the car is competitive - and I decide to run the Bilsteins - they'll still plug into the car and I'll just have an extra tarmac set up. BTW - Stock the 504 front suspension has 10 inches of wheel travel, the 505 Turbo doesn't have as much with a lower ride height an all - but the travel should be an easy 8". So my decision has been done with a great deal of thought and research. I'm also basing this on the experience of running an STI (Bilstein) road racing suspension on the 92' Legacy in the early 00's... We did fantastic against dudes running DMS - so I'm confident in the direction I'n goin in. Final justification is that I'm starting with pavement events, likely solo 1 / time attack to sort out the powertrain. It will also be built to do both road racing and Rally... (Might not be competitive at either- but I'll have a shitload of fun!) I'll have to check out what the Volvo guys are going with since the 505 is very close to the weight and design of those 240's... I'd rather saddle up to an existing run and the Volvo's would be a nice match. As for Tim's work - supsension looks bloody unreal! Fantastic workmanship! Rabin Edited 1 time(s). After looking at the dimensions for the 50mm stuff, I think the 40mm version is definitely going to suit my dual purpose plan...
John - Any dimensions on the 40mm tubes that you'll be using yet? As g'damn beautiful the 50mm set up is, I think I'll be happier with the 40mm stuff for what my needs are... I play down the projected competitiveness of the 505 to keep expectations in check, but if the car is as good as I think it will be, and it makes 50mm necessary - then I can do that later as I got tons of spares. Currently the entire car is being overhauled - so cost is a deciding factor for not doing the 50mm set up right off the bat - especially with the reseach I've done to ensure the modded stock set up will be quite competent. Still got no idea for a name for them - but POOP works for me... Although "OST" is the logical acronym (Offset Strut Thingie) Rabin |
