Found a Volvo 242 Flathood
March 28, 2008 10:15PM
Well,

All this talk about Volvo's has made me seriously look into a 242 for a rally car. I've found one, 83 242 Flathood, turbo'd and intercooled. Very nice shape, no rust and alot of the little bits have been tended to already.

Before I actually purchase it, any concerns with this model? I did the forum search and did not find anything addressing this model specifically. Figure I'll draw from the collective well before spending cash... this time! smiling smiley

Well, it is a volvo so it will never be as cool as a corolla.

Hey Dan go for it.
That is a "K-Jet" or "CIS" injection system. Nothing wrong, just wants clean fuel with no water if its going to or has sat for long periods.
It should have IIRC the most desirable of all the Volvo motors the B23.
It's most desirable because its 2300 and has a forged steel crank that cannot be hurt even in 500+ bhp motors so if you use you brain and don't go crazy, it'll make all the power you can use and have a huge margin of safety.

How much?
What color?

I had heard you were thinking of a 131, what's the que paso on that?

Did anybody decide to get George Beckermans car and goodies?

Nor will it come close to an Abarth 131, Lancia 037 or a Delta Integrale, or.... well you get the idea. One thing it does have is existence, because in this part of the world Corollas(and the above mentioned) disappeared a long time ago. grinning smiley

The car is in use as a daily driver so it's not suffered from sitting. It's the silver with blue interior. Price is still being negotiated, so I'll update as we progress.

I was really looking into the 131, just can't help myself when its Italian. But, the lessons from the Beta Coupe have slowed me. Parts are hard to find, at least the body stuff. The one i have found is a pile of rust vaguely resembling a Fiat, at least 6 months of welding before we even get to the race mods. If I did run a 131, I'd swap the rear to a Volvo unit anyway. So... why not just run a Volvo and save all the fab work. A volvo unit comes with the 242! smiling smiley

The final thing that's pushing me is the "don't love your rally car". I love Italian cars and always wind up trying to make them perfect. Volvos on the other hand are cars that i'll walk out daily and kick for good measure.

Psshh. Corollas are more in existence then Volvos. Volvos only exist as good/cool cars to old men and finnish people.

You haven't been to the Midwest recently. 2001 Chevy's are already rusted past the door handles

And Corollas exist to all the drifter fag kids or old men. And you can never do anything about how ugly they are.
Just kidding. Not all drifter kids are fags. smiling smiley

So, by that logic Ford trucks are much, much more "in existance" than corollas, ergo corollas only exist as better than good/cold cars to middle aged men and japanese people?

Why do volvo people care so much about the shape of their hoods?

No idea.
You have to park them rifgt next to eachother and have a Volvo-perv take you by the hand to point out the differences.
Meh!

All I know is the round headlight versions look 10 times better than the ones with 2 portable TVs for headlights!!!!

John the 240 will have the 2.1 and will need an NPR intercooler and Cossie turbo right out of the box.

The 240 will make a fine rallycar.

I'm sure having a ball with my naughty 240.
