Specifically on his Volvo Dana 30 halfshafts.

First, Adam way bad and delivered them all dirty, they must have laid in a swap for years and for some reason he didn't want to spend HOURS taking the bearings off so Kevvie and I spent hours getting them off.
Then we plug welded all the holes on the flage and I kissed the front and back clean then we made the centering spigot Toyota size.

They're ready!!

You made your drilling jig yet???
Better get it right!!!!

They look spiffier than shit.

Dual-shield MIG makes for some nice welds.

There's one of Adam's Volvo axles next to one of my Toyota axles.

And here's what dual-shield MIG looks like:

Hey John,

Did you weld in plugs, or just fill in with rod? Just trying to figure how to do mine.

Thanks,
Mark B.

John did the machining, while I was welding.

Clamped a copper plate to one side, and then from the other side, plug welded with the MIG. (Dual-shield is flux covered wire plus shielding gas.) Then, weld again on the backside to fill in any little holes.

Thanks for the explanation, that was my next question. Looks remarkably splatter-free. Is that the miracle of dual shielding, or just getting your settings right?

When dual shield is set properly it's basically spray arc welding. Very smooth with none of the short arc MIG spatter just a cone of tiny metal droplets flying off the wire. I love welding with 0.045" Lincoln Outershield 71 (and the equivalent in other brands) wire because you can lay down a 3/8" fillet in one pass and it will still freeze quickly in out of position welding.

5.3 is FUN!! power -shift- power - shift- power
i did get your mail. would you like me to stop by in the car tomorrow?
in the evening there will be beer as a pre rally fun at the redhook brewery near woodinville, redmond. i'll only have an hour or less.

so a ring and pinion carrier with a volvo 3.7 gear was handed to ritch at driveline service in b'ham. (he's the man- building a one piece driveline later)
it was the same size as the 3.5 carrier that was pulled from my axle. math was done to get the dana gear meshing properly.

as far as which axle to pick? any volvo is the exact same width. same input flange to axle length too. i'll picture the adapter ring that was made so my driveline bolted right up.
the volvo brakes fit under the 14" wheels, but pedal travel is too long, then very "grabby" does anyone know if a supra had a similar mc with larger bores?

would a residual pressure valve 2psi wilwood thing help by keeping the pads close to discs?
problem is alot more volume to the rear brakes than previous.
