adding camber
May 19, 2008 12:52AM
Any suggestions on where I can go from here to add some camber. Car is a 2002 Impreza with JVAB 50mm suspension. Front is using the standard top hole eccentric bolt, stock top-mounts with STi (19mm wider) lower A-arms. In the back is stock top mounts with stock bolts in the ears (no adjustment) and adjustable lateral links.
the alignment shop (redneck circle track guys) said the best they could get was 0 degrees front and rear with the car still tracking straight.
Pretty sure nothings bent. Do I need to go to adjustable top-mounts front and rear? Who makes rally-duty ones that'll fit the JVAB's?
FWIW even with 0 camber all around the car feels awesome in testing. (real testing on closed rally road)
Suggestions? I'm tempted to rework the towers to angle them inwards if I was sure I wouldn't mess up a whole lot of geometry.

Unless you do something custom like you mentioned, I think you'll need adj top camber plates. Aftermarket camber bolts are an option, but they're not as beefy as the stock bolt, so I wouldn't go there.

there's a lot of options out there for Suby's....just do a web search. I'm sure folks on here potentially know some custom fabricators too. In fact, after destroying my Tein's last year, I'd be interested to see what options come up...

What ride height you got the car set at?
If you're at a hgt youse is happy with, what advantage do you think there will be to be rolling on the inner third of your tires.

You can change the crossmember bolt position 1/4 inch up and 1/4 inch out. That'll give you a bit o' neg.

I run a Sub-a-rat and the more I land jumps, the more negative camber I get. As a matter of fact, the top of the rear tires start to rub the DMS struts after a while. Same thing used to happen on the SAAB and the GLH. So on the Subie,we unbolt everything and retighten. On the SAAB we had to go the boneyard for another rear axle.

More camber can be acheived just using a floor-jack on the outside of the rotor before you tighten the ears, a sledge hammer and/or a porta-power.

Or drill your strut ear holes oversize, bolt them together with close fitting washers, on both sides, get the alignment where you want it and tack weld the washers to the ears.

BTW, 460ft/lbs sounds like fun!

Running Baie?

A good point here is what I alluded to in my OP. The car feels really good as is and the ride height although higher than I'm used to (425mm from wheel arch to wheel centre vs 400mm that I usually set up) can just soak up the nastiest roads and jumps, keeping the car very stable. So I think I'll run an event as is. It's one of these things where I think I just "have" to have neg camber because "everyone" does.

Well, when you slide and the car rolls to the outside tires, that negative camber will be used to give you FULL contact patch... meaning that "third of the tire" becomes the WHOLE tire.

Yes we know. Do YOU know how little a tire rolls over on loose gravel?

Re: adding camber

Its probably less then I think it SHOULD be, and more then you think it is. Its going to depend on the tire itself, the tire pressure, the tire's temperature, the tire's sidewall, the weight of the car, the speed at which you turn in, how smoothly you transfer the weight of the car, spring rate and roll bar will probably come into play, etc....

So really, there is a whole bunch of shit that's gonna determine how little the tire rolls on gravel. And little is a very subjective term. Little compared to what? Asphalt? Or another gravel turn? Ice?

FYI, I dont plan on running camper plates/adjustors

I'm not too concerned with adding camber....more about a top-hat that can hold up to rally abuse.

last year at Gorman there were a couple cars that had struts blow through the top. One blew both rears in the first stage, they were sticking out of the rear dash like broken chicken wings.

rallispec makes a nice one, but I guess only for the rs&sp's

http://rallispec.com/prod_rssp.htm

haven't seen anything out there much cheaper than that.

Yeah those are for the RS&SP's only. I thought you were all hot to trot about subaru's. The stock Subaru mounts NEVER ever fail so donna worry.

Ha, ha, you're a funny guy.

Don't the JVAB struts have any camber adjustment? Or is that all you can get out of them? I would be cool with running them at 0. You don't really want to run more than about 1-1.5 degrees negative anyway on a Subaru. I used to try to run my Omni as close to zero as possible with Michelin rally tires or else you wouldn't get even tread wear. Run the shit out of a set of tires (on stage) and you can tell where you need to be.

The only reason anyone I know has switched out the oem subaru top mounts was for adjustable tops. I've never seen one fail. Even really old crappy ones. Has anyone seen them fail? I'd be interested to see. Never heard of it.
