We're pulling the motor/engine out... After starting on the front cover, it seemed just as easy to take the motor/engine out and bolt it to a stand. Everythings stripped off the long block and tomorrow we just have to pull the bolts off the bell housing, and she should slip out.

This may not be the simplest route, but I am learning a shitload and building confidence at the same time !

What do you call that bolt with the funky star like head that bolts the head to the cover housing ?

Not really much to show yet...

The coolant looks a little "off", where can I buy the "fucking thing, George, Betty, or whatever"... is it a common automotive item ?

12 point metric? Some of the things I'm familar with that are similar to what you refer to are simply metric and use a 12 point socket to remove. Kind of looks like an inverted torque head bolt? (or is it torx?) Anyhow, as a woodworker you should know what I mean.

Morten,

Just describe the star-head bolt to the guy at your local autoparts store (or print your photo and take it in). He'll recognize it and sell you a proper wrench to use with your 3/8" ratchet.

But don't reinstall it. Replace it with a bolt that has a conventional head.

Holy shit Morten. That's a torques head I believe. Not even an inverted one. They are used mostly as a better quality wood screw as they don't strip. I would have thought that you'd have recognized it. smiling smiley

Thanks Grant... I've never come across one before.

But what I've found on the net is that it's refered to as a "6 lobe or a torx".

During my short stint as a professional skateboard ramp builder, I used exclusively torx screws. They don't ever strip can suck in easier. A bit more expensive, but I was never paying for them. Of course, I only did two projects, one set of ramps for a nationwide skateboard/punk rock tour and a skateboard park in Wyoming. Here's me at the one in Wyoming.

It is a TORX.

TORX bits are readily available at your friendly tool stores such as SEARS or HARBOR FREIGHT.

Get a set, they are cheapish.

A few things.

yes, they will strip in a heartbeat if you let them

and

get a good set of torx tools or you are just going to snap them (the tools) all day long.

Before I remove them, I use a pick to clean out the head and tap in the tightest fitting torx tool I can. Give it a few good whacks to make sure it is seated in all the way and break them free.
