some great photos of REAL VWM parts throughout this thread. Better than the VWM partslists that used to be floating around...

JVL,

The pictures of the VWM control arms suggest that WV actually dialed OUT a little bit of castor on gravel and dialed IN some extra for tarmac. I remember you suggesting that dialing IN extra castor would be most helpful.

Am I missing something?

Trying to decipher the bits of info contained in the pics...

Josh, Well spotted. Why would you want to dial out the castor for the gravel, but dial it in for tarmac? Why could you not build a set of ball joints with an offset so you could accomplish the same effect?

Josh been busy making a Toyota 8" pick up axle into a Volvo axle (don't you wish you could slap in a humongously bigger diff and ring gear with only some lathe and welding?)

What about the picture suggest that?
What we don't know is what track the cars were set. Ford and Subaru and Toyota had "wide track" options so if its length of arm what's the rest of the set up look like.

Didn't we see in some set up charts about the same castor tween asphalt and gravel.

I personally think its more a fucnction of speed rather than surface.

The mk3 kit car spec sheets say 6* castor on tarmac and 4*50' for gravel.

I like the bit in that thread about using the audi outer cv's that use the axle bolts instead of the axle nuts because apparently that way you can change axles without taking the balljoint off since the nose of the outer shaft is shorter.

Now if there was a simple way to get rid of the stupid 6 bolts that hold on the inner cv...

You have to take the balljoints off to swap axles?

I don't, but I drop (well, raise) the inner first.

Plenty of practice at it, too sad smiley

Isn't the Audi CV bigger than the VW one as well? Stronger? I wonder what splines those use. Anyone have an idea?
