Rally Steering Wheels - anyone used any of these?
September 19, 2008 12:08AM
Hey all,

I'm in the market for a new steering wheel. I'm looking to get a 2-point 350mm rally wheel. Has anyone used any of the points listed on rallynuts.com? I'm having a hard time deciding between various brands, i.e. omp, sparco, momo, sabelt. All seem to be in the same price range, and similair styles. Not sure which are more durable and/or lightweight in comparison.

Anyone have any preferences? I was leaning more towards omp or sabelts 2-point wheels.

i have one of these http://rallynuts.com/motorsport/Rally_Steering_Wheels_2203/OMP_Corsica_Steering_Wheel_2187.asp

absolutely love it.

I love OMP stuff.

i personally at it this way.

Sparco: Blingy, fancy stuff, maybe less function
momo: Bling bling
OMP: Function first, and may not be the hippest and coolest looking.

Having said that, each factory is likely around the corner from eachother, and it's probably all the same stuff.

I use an OMP wheel from Checkpoint Racing. It was like $40-50 less than the rest.

Don't see it on their website though. Then again, they don't have all their inventory online.

I think that's the one I'm talking about. I think it was $140-150, whereas most of the Sparco and Momo ones Checkpoint has were like $190.

+1 for checkpoint racing.

I have the sparco '345' w/suede cover. Not sure why they call it the 345 since its 350mm

anyway, I really like it...very light. I bought it mostly for the dish (65mm) its pretty much perfect wheel placement w/a thin NRG quick release and the momo hub (i'm 6ft tall).

something about the 2-spoke for me I didn't like....but I think it was just a mental thing.

$190 at checkpoint racing, but that's $50 less than list and anywhere else on the web.

as far as function vs bling....well, I think racing cars is a whole lotta bling winking smiley

We like our Momo Model 07s, which are deep dish and found on a lot of Porsches. About $175 if you look.

FWIW, I think that the majority if not all Italian steering wheels are made in the same factory. A lot of minor changes and rebranding going on.

NRG quick release

I used to sell NRG products. There is no way in HELL, that I would EVER install ANY NRG product in even my STREET car, if it were responsible for any kind of critical fucntion, such as holding the steering wheel on.

There is a reason NRG products are 60% cheaper than their counterparts.

Seriously, dude. That's scary. You know how many times I had people call me because a bolt broke or something failed on one of those POS NRG quick releases? Fuuuuuck.

I've got an OMP 3-spoke - not on the link though. Quite happy with it.
In the Golf I would have liked a deeper dish, but I could just get around to machining a space - that would help.
