Grassroots RallyX Suspension Setup
October 01, 2008 05:39PM
I am looking for a recommendation for what I could use to start Rallycross.

The car is an 81 Volvo 244. B23E with an M46 (Canadian Car).

I was wondering what I can put together without a ton of $$$$.

Are springs from a 245 any stiffer?
What about shocks?
Etc?

As for springs. have you measured the O.D. of the existing springs? If you are lucky, they will be close to a standard circle track spring diameter, and then you will have lots to choose from. I have used the 5" for rears of Stock class GM cars in this type of thing.

Couple about a 30-40% increase in spring rate with a simple mid piced shock/strut (KYcool smiley and you will have something A-OK. Not an exact spring and shcok rate match, but a very notable improvement. We stage rallied for years on this type setup; Bilsteins were notably better than KYB's with this increase in spring rate stiffness.

have you rallycrossed the car yet?

might want to run it at least once the way it sits so you have a baseline.

what is your ultimate goal for the car?

No I have not rallycrossed the car. I am going to be working on it over the winter. The current shocks and struts are done. The car bounces about 5 or 6 cycles if you bounce it. I figured I might as well plan on new suspension.

I am planning to RallyX and put the car back on the road to do TSD's. Somewhere down the road, I figured that I would try to cage it and run rallies, but that will be sometime down the road.

Just run stock stuff for now. So many regions do things differently that it's impossible to say from here. The three regions closest to me are totally different: one runs on a tight clay surface, one runs on a high speed hilly grassy area, and a third runs on (jumpless) ATV tracks and horse tracks. All require different setups to be "optimal".

So you may go stiffer when you want softer, or something else dumb.

But stock usually works good wherever, maybe slap in some Bilstein HDs since you need new dampers anyway.
