Feet and Gusset thickness...
October 09, 2008 09:17AM
Hmmn, I'm struggling to find the PDF of the FIA cage construction guidelines which I know is tucked away somewhere safe on this laptop...

How thick do mounting plates and gussets have to be? I've got 3mm (1/8"winking smiley stuck in my head but my head isn't as reliable as I'd like it to be, and it also strikes me that bending those taco shaped gussets out of 1/8" is not likely to be a practical reality.

I was looking at this thingy:

http://grizzly.amazonwebstore.com/Grizzly-H0731-Sheet-Metal-Shears-5/M/B0000DD1GK.htm?utm_campaign=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle

and wondering if it was beefy enough to be useful, says it's good to 5/32" which ballparks to 4mm.

Ted,
Here's a link to FIA 253. The gussets need to be 1mm minimum, sheet metal, and the foot plates need to be at least 3mm , which I think is 1/8 inch.

What Gene said.

I use cheap Harbor Freight electric shears with much success.
There's a few how to threads on here about how to make them, as well as some cool Tim Taylor made printable gussett shapes, which are also available at:

Thanks very much guys.

I remember Tim's thread on the tacos, I didn't realize someone had archived the drawings though.

Cheers, Ted

Plus 1/8" welds nicely to body sheet metal.

Cool on the gusset diagrams; very nice of him the put these out for eveyone. One note, if you are trying to be truly FIA, a 'bite' needs to be taken ouf the corner of the gusset where the tubes meet. The hole is good, but does not comply with the FIA gusset diagram. That corner is subject to burning through anyway when welding a gusset as thin as 1mm.

Mark B.
