for bolting up underbody protection.

google searches are not helping me, but I don't think I'm using the right keywords.

Those look a little large. I have a bunch of weld nets from McMaster-Carr in M6 and a bunch of M6 stainless steel button heads that I plan to use for my underbody protection, if I ever get around to it. The idea/method was donated by Eric Burmeister and is how his is attached on the Mazda apparently.

One thing I love about McMaster is they save your full order history and you can just click to get back to the items if you ever need to order more.

Part Number: 90563A630
$8.30 per pack of 100
Metric Plain Steel Round-base Weld Nut, M6 Sz,1.0mm Pitch,19.1mm Base Dia,11.1mm H Barrel

Part Number: 92095A240
$6.91 per pack of 25
Metric 18-8 Ss Button Head Socket Cap Screw, M6 Size, 20 Mm Length, 1 Mm Pitch

I also ordered M8 ones, which I've used for mounting: p/s reservoir, front bumper, battery box, breather tank, coolant reservoir/expansion tank, and the intercooler.

thx....yeah, haven't decided exactly what size I'll get...whatever is appropriate for the grade8 hardware I currently have.

that one is also mounted on the outside, which is fine/necessary if its welded to the frame...but if its to the sheetmetal on the floor (which on a suby is pretty thin), i'm thinking it'd be better to go on the inside.

Would these be a better solution than just running a grade 8 bolt through the floor with a nice fat washer?

I'm using the stainless WWZ weld nuts on my new shell because the protect the bolt threads from everything. Not as cheap as a thru bolting but you don't need to reach both sides to install stuff either.

No. Well, kinda. But not really. It makes the stainless "normal" kinda. It will weld.. but you shouldnt.

Dear Timmay,

could you be anymore non-committal?

Thanks,

Tom

Yes you can weld stainless to mild steel. You can also weld stainless with normal wire, it pulls some of the nickel( or whatever )into the weld and it doesn't rust as much as normal. Now this applies to ss exhaust pipes and tips and such. Beyond that I don't know so much...

Ignore Timm...yes you can weld 300 series stainless to steel easily. The 18-8 listed for the Ohio weld nuts can be MIG or TIG welded to any shell you're likely to be working on.

Firstly, not arguing, you have more experience then I do.

I was under the impression that you could weld it fine... I've welded 304 stainless with mild steel tig rod before (I cant remember the alloy). They werent pretty, but it welded decently (if I didnt suck with thin stainless) I just thought it would make it not so stainless anymore? Can you explain whats going on?
