Good tires for 1/2 pavement / 1/2 dirt event?
November 03, 2008 10:57PM
curious what would be the best choice of tire for an event is 1/2 on pavement and 1/2 on dirt alternating. Or what grooving to an existing tire would be good? This is for an Rx7 application w/ 14 or 15 tires

1/2 dirt & 1/2 paved + Colorado Springs = hmmmm....

Pikes peak?

Monster was running these on the XL-7

With NO cuts. But it's more of a truck tire. 285/60/18

The VW toureg boys were running Michelin? all season tires with 1/4" diagonal sipes across the outside edges.

Lots of others ran pretty much slicks with wide deep cuts.

It depends on how much faster the tarmac areas are. The faster those areas are the bigger the advantage is going with a tire that is closer to an all out asphalt time. And what is the dirt condition. Back when I was rallyxing the focus I ran Z rated Kumho 712s at the rallyxs that had a very firm clay base. They were useless in the wet but in the dry they had fairly good traction.

Dave Kern ran and liked the Yoko mixed rally tire. Record holder for AWD Time Attack currently. Ordered from Canada.

Are there any actual tire rules? Something like a McCreary dirt tire might work. Prolly not great on loose gravel, but they are incredable on packed stuff and asphalt.

Hey, I was going to ask this question, Alex... smiling smiley I'm going to be hardcore into the SuperMoto RallyX series next year in Flint. I was at the test and tune last month and it fairly rocked.

I am not withheld by any tire rules (it has to hold air, that's about it) but I'd kinda prefer something I can drive on the street, so I am leaning towards the chunkiest high performance street tire I can locate.

I do know that with crap suspension that both understeered in corners and couldn't put power down worth a damn coming out of them because it was unweighting the inside rear so much, I was still less than a second off of much, much better equipment/drivers on a 54-sec course. (This new engine is awesome!)

I'm running my good ol' BFG G-Force Sports, which do have the advantage of being cheap street tires. I have not had opportunity to see how they do on dirt, yet. I don't expect to fare well against the AWD guys since we're all lumped into one big run-whatcha-brung class.

I can test out a few tires choices on some back road areas that switch up

I am not sure where you are running but I have found rally tires to work very well on tarmac and I would lean to using a good rally tire for the whole event.

Some very hard packed dirt is suitable for good tarmac tires.

I have even auto-x'ed on rally tires... use up worn down ones.

most of the course is asphalt and is where most of the time is made up for the dirt sections. The dirt is usually pretty packed and well maintained from the people who drive on it daily for the tourism aspects.

What rally tires? Gravel or mud or tarmac? (Some of the guys were running tarmac rally tires)

I saw Evan Moen go from all-seasons to his gravel tires (Silverstones IIRC) for a couple runs and then he went right back to all seasons.
(Maybe Silverstones just suck?)

He was the only one who experimented with different tires.

I run Hankooks, I don't know if they'd do well given that they overheat on dirt.

I seem to remember something about kyle sarasin setting a record up brockway this year, on gravel tires...
