Also I have heard there like 4 different pulley’s and need different offsets I
want to solve the problem for everyone with like spacers or washers or something I
don’t want to send them out and they need something for a v belt when I send them
a serpentine setup.
All I would need the car for would be max 3 days, I’m in Redmond though Redmond
ridge and my number is 425 463 5307

I gave a bit of thought to this VW Power Steering pump bracketry today and....

--I think it would be best to make a mount that is universal for mk2 and mk3 VWs regardless of whether they choose to run 8v, 16v, stock intake, carbs, ITBs, alternator in stock location or shere the AC compressor goes....etc etc

---The ONLY solution I can think of that would be the close to universal for the various NA setups people run is to mount the PS pump tucked BEHIND the motor. Perhaps the mount can come off of the arm coming off the block that attaches to the right rear motor mount.

Disclaimer:
I don't have a car here to look at so I can't check to see if I am totally crazy or not...

I think moving the PS pump up would be huge....I think the alternator would be cheaper to run in the rear though, although the size of the alternator might be an issue...?

Ditto, don't put the PS on the back - I wouldn't want my powersteering fluid any hotter than it already is. ALternator to the back

William,

I can drive my car out to your place but them you would either need to give me a ride back to West Seattle or do all the measuring there. Can you do what you need to do on a Saturday?

As far as relocating any components.........there ain't much room on the back side of the 8V engine. I recently changed a rear motor mount and it was tight. It would be worse with headders. I think that it would be better to keep the same general locations and go with a more solid mounting system that also protects the pulleys better. I have a good skid plate, but on the Totem rally I was getting massive belt slip in the deep snow. Could we incorporate a small guard and belt guide for the PS?

Robert.

Why not put the PS pump where the AC compressor should be? Seems like a 9A or ABA solution would cover 99% of cars out there.

because lots of people---although not us---put the alternator where the AC is so they can run carbs or ITBs or just to move the alternator down low for center of gravity reasons...

In addition, there are at least a few different brackets that go there depending on your arrangement (AC vs non AC, Serpentine VS v-belts) so it is not possible to make a universal bracket that will work in that spot.

I would like to reserve that area for the alternator for future itbs or carbs

I would certainly rather have heat issues with PS than have an alternator that fails regularly from being baked.

Failed PS==tired arms
Failed alternator==DNF

Plus, the PS pump is smaller and could be easily sheilded with a bit of aluminum or a soft reflective " heat jacket"

Certainly true Josh.

And since I'm going carbs, my Alternator is currently mounted where the AC was. But not enough clearance from the bottom of the alternator and the radiator so it's way down low. Something has to go to the back or stay on the bottom for ITB/Carbs.

I ran 3 events so far without ps for various reasons and my arms never got tired. I do like running with a functional alternator however smiling smiley
