Simple argument stopper - even or odd lights
December 15, 2008 07:31AM
Alright simple argmument and I dont feel like sorting through all the rules right now.

Are we allowed to run an odd number of lights on the front of the car? Two headlights and 3 spots? ??

NASA only allows lights to be added in even numbers.

True about NASA...but... look at some pics from NASA events that run at night and count the lights on some of the entries... winking smiley

They usually do check at CARS events, atleast to make sure that they dim with the high-beams.

I remember at i think PFR 2007, a car needed to remove one light as they had 3 mounted on the front...

This brings back memories of the 1986 Olympus WRC rally, in the parking lot of the Tacoma Dome bolting a cheesy little auxillary light (probably bought at Shuck's) to the front bumper of JVL's SAAB 96 to get an even number of lights. Yes, FIA had that rule too...

Michigan did not allow odd number of lights. Something to do with the Tucker auto with the 3rd light.

Itsa goofy rule. I personally don't check nor do I care..3 lights side by side fit between the headlites on many cars just right. To do 4 lites you have to stagger them with a more complicated light bar. Rich folks get the fancy pods so it doesn't matter to them.

Someone , years ago, lost their forward lites and came into service with a big flaslite held out the window. I don't think they left service however.

ASIK, Michigan has has no limit on the number of lights mounted, only on the number that may be lit at one time. Result of a conversation with a deputy when we were on a TSD with a MK 1 Capri with 4 auxiliary lamps. Limit to minimum and maximum height. I ran 3 lamps on the TSD/street 96 for years with no hassle. One really can't fit 4 usefully sized lights between the headlamps of a 96 when mounting on the bumper.

Check out 3.2.1.3 in the NASA Rule book that was posted today.

Auxiliary headlights may be fitted, provided the number
installed is even or, if odd, that the lights are
symmetrically mounted with one light in the center.

So as long as the odd light is in the middle it looks like you are good. I am still a little unsure about what happens if say you hit something and break a light what happens? Could you be protested.

Anyother thing I saw in there that I found interesting. Was section 7.

It is not permitted to fit any device that can alter the
normal functioning of the brake lights.

I know some people put switches on all of the rear lights so they can run the alternator at is minimum on stage. My take is that these type of switches are illegal.

What? People really do that? I hope nobody that might be starting in front of me on a night stage! If that's not illegal it should be...
