Rod End Dust protection boots
December 26, 2008 05:32PM
I was perusing the UK rally site mentioned in the pin jack thread, and came across these:

http://www.motorsport-tools.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=293_300&products_id=930

Since the rod ends on my rallycross/daily driver keep dying due to contamination, where is a good place to get some rod end protector booties like the ones posted above? Anywhere cheap (preferably in the US)? I usually buy my rod ends from Mcmaster-Carr, but they don't seem to sell anything to keep the grit out.

Any ideas?

Cool, thanks!

Looks like Summit sells these same seals for a little cheaper than listed on the manufacturers site:

So, would you put a little grease on the rod prior to installing these? How would that work on non-greasable teflon lined rod ends?

Yup, just grease 'em up a bit, or in colder weather a little bit of heavy (20W-50) synthetic oil works well.

I remember when the Seals-it guys were starting out, I visited their shop (local to me). They were hand pouring the seals 10 at a time in an old building loft!

Put some grease on your finger and run it thru the dirt.
Do you want that on the rod end?
There is a spray on vinyl/rubber compound used for tool grips. There is also a dip type in a can. Check out EASTWOOD tools/auto parts store or big box store.
The dip style will allow you to build up a thick coat and is not as messy as the spray.

The Boeshield T9 dries to a firm waxy coating as well -- won't provide any lubrication but might seal the dust and grit out. Is apparently good for keeping coilover body threads from crudding up.

My guess is a wipe and re-application each event would go a long way towards making this work.

What are you using the rod ends for and what size are they? Teflon lined or no?

Mine last a very long time in the rear trailing arms and lateral links being roosted by gravel tires relentlessly.

Never had a failure.

i just got samples in the mail from sealsit the boot looks great for 3/4 but its
thinner than what i had in mind never the less i dig the boots, they also sent me
the seal washers to see what i like more. The boot will help me make my stuff more
universal. Nice guys too

Looks like the full boots aren't much cheaper than a new rod end...
