Anyone have issues rally'ing Subarat WRX stock DriveShafts?

I'm just curious because by the time my car sees any stage miles, it'll already have about +115K miles on it, and I'm always trolling the NASIOC 'FS: Drivetrain Parts' thread and I always see the 1-piece aluminum driveshafts for really good deals, and I just wonder if i should pick one up and have one less thing to worry about on the stages, or do these *rarely* break?

so any of you ever bust one or hear of one failing of its own accord?

you don't want to rally on the 1-piece alloy driveshafts...

The stock shafts are fine, i've rallied on some very high KM prop shafts, and cv shafts with no problems.

friends have a 1991 Legacy Turbo, which had over 300,000km on it when they started rallying it, they rallied for 2 seasons, and then put in a Ver 4 STi motor, and have rallied on that for a season. Haven't had a problem...we do carry a spare though.

I think i've broke 2 or 3 in about 15 rallies in an open class Subaru...If you can get them to fit run the R180 driveshafts though, they are much stronger, I think I only broke one of those...Stick with stock R180's if you can and keep a spare, you should be just fine

Edit: as with Chris my driveshafts, propshaft etc. have never been new, always off of clips we get in

because it doesn't fit right..you have to beat and bang on the car to make it fit.

Why use a fancy pants alloy one when the stock will do and spares are super cheap.

Jon, I have a one piece I'd get rid of cheap from "the driveshaft shop" if you are coming to Plan B or HDT (jan or feb) you can pick it up then. Mark

ah, yeah I know about the fitment issue; banging and beating on my car isn't a problem. If I can buy an upgraded part cheap, and have my stock piece for backup, that's a good plan by me. Its a good weight reduction piece AND less rotating mass.

Mark, not sure if I'm going to be at either of those rallies yet (haven't heard 100% from my driver yet), but I'll let you know. cheap is good grinning smiley

Silly question here-semantics. Are you discussing driveshaft ( trans to diff) or halfshafts ( diff to wheel) ? Despite 25 years + selling imports auto parts, I'm afraid I'm not yet fluent in Subaru.

trans to diff - the big one

+1 on the stocker. Get a spare or two and fuggetabout it. My car has 8 rallies and no issues.
