Holy fucking ridiculous.
"The Sommers Brother's axle. It's made out of chrome moly and much stronger than the factory axle as well as being longer to fit the new A-arms. The inner splines are cut to fit a standard Lubro CV joint, such as from a Porsche or BMW car. The picture shows the inner splines prepped for the new Lubro joint." Why the fuck would you want to put a Porsche or BMW CV joint on your car? The truck guys it says use it because it allows for extreme angles encountered in off road/rock crawling that the Toyota inner wouldn't allow for. But for the Merkur I have no clue why someone would want to go that route. Here's the site: http://www.brian894x4.com/WCORIFSINSTALLPT2.html It's near the bottom. The joint is from a Porshe 930 and BMW 8 series. Grant Hughes Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 03/29/2006 04:17PM by NoCoast. |

It's expensive so it's got to be good, right?
I thought that is what we're supposed to do, pick the most expensive, convoluted, irreplaeable, impractical soution pissible? Fuck... I'm trying to find a inexpensive, reasonaby low profile, readily available, ball joint that I can use front and rear on fabricated lower control arms (we'll machine the taper to fit). Anyone got any suggestiosnn that aren't porsche or BMW? -Martin. |

God do I hate stupidly concieved "problem solving" and stupid forums. I really would like to post a few things regarding the Supra diff CV adaptors. And gently poit out to some of the knobs that the belief that engineers are the spanwn of the devil is a commonly help belief by those who have to keep running and service things designed by "injur-near" types who don't have to do either, and who, due to their own extremely stunted cognitive albilities, rerely recognize when they are positing things well out of their areas of expertise. Amen, there's one of them over on turd-bo ford.orgy trying to convince me MAF (Mass Air Flow) is way superior to Speed/ Density.

Mike- You found this place! Welcome!
Hey I for one wouldn't mine getting an engineering degree one day. But I think John's point is regarding how alot of engineers work through ideas. And what dogma they hold. Look at the MAF vs. S/D post. JohnK claims to be an engineer, probably is one. But I, and Ford motorsport I might add, would tend to disagree with him regarding the usefulness of Mass Air Flow for use in turbocharged engines. And then you read the post on "hillbilly MAF air straightener" or some such, and you start to wonder about some peoples reasoning. Scott Manley Spokane, WA 86' XR4Ti 37 |

Totally agree and for the record, I am NOT a "real" engineer. I do a lot of different types of design/engineering, but I have not put the time in for a full degree. So I take no offense from an engineer being made fun of. A few weeks ago a friend and I were talking about the "internet engineers". We know a BUNCH of actual Ford engineers who get on websites every day trying to tell people how to build race cars. Fact is many of these guys have no actual experience. Having a half done car in you garage for 10 years doesn't count. Many of these guys certianly are engineers, but guess what many of them do? Stuff like door handles. LOL Even the guys who are doing different engine work haven't ever actually built an engine, raced it, and gained experiance from the stuff that breaks and the stuff that holds together. Yet they seem to want to tell everyone how things should be done. I learned a long time ago the best way to be better at something is to admit what you DON'T know. Though I know I don't always keep that in mind. Anymore I try to just keep a low profile and pick out the guys who seem to know their stuff from experiance. Then I call them.
I see it at work to. We have one engineer who is very smart and is extremely good at doing energy studies and stuff like that. Yet if this person had to design the mechanical system for a a simple shop in a strip mall, it would take her a long time to do it and it wouldn't be right. We keep encouraging her to take a more active role in design. What if she suddenly had to find a new job somewhere or what if our energy work suddenly dried up? She'd be in big trouble. Yeah Scott, Grant sent me the address. I am hoping to do some hill climbs/rally/open track soon. It's probably not going to be in an XR this year though. Just not enoguh time/money. Probably going to work out a deal to lease a chassis that a buddy of mine just bought. Still planning to get my drag XR on the track. Plus we are in the middle of trying to sell a house, buy a new house, and move. Mike Hymbaugh "Converted" drag racer Castle Rock, CO http://www.four-banger.net/first.html |

Hi Mike. Did we yakk a long time ago about you buildinga road race car or something? Back in late 90s???? Anyway you asked and then answered the question far better than I could have what the continual problem with injur-nears is. It's a well know and well documented problem, so the real interesting thing I think is to try and understand what combination of social and cultural forces produces (or facilitates an already exsisting) tendancies which you write about. ------------------------------------------------------- > Totally agree and for the record, I am NOT a > "real" engineer.
