Welded Diff thoughts
July 18, 2006 03:29PM
Put about 150 miles of dirt driving on it on Sunday. Mostly tight twisty and technical. Much, much better than an open diff that's for sure. Diff held up well. Gearbox did not but that's okay as I was planning to go to T5 anyhow. You have to stay on top of things especially when coming into a corner hot and downshifting as the rear will kick out, but you can use that to the advantage. The final drive still sucks though, as does the T9 gearing, and that was my biggest complaint. If there were a cheap ring and pinion available I'd be content running a low ratio welded Ford diff. But as it's not, I went and pulled a 4.3 ratio Supra LSD yesterday after work. Spotted a Supra that someone had lifted the ass on to pull the gas tank on Saturday. Went back yesterday after work with my cordless impact and had it out in very little time. Cage work starts in two weeks!

Was this testing done at that dirt track you have the 'arrangement' with, or are there even MORE good roads in Co?

Wello a really tight clutch plate diff, and by that I mean like breakaway torque like 175 ft/lbs or more will be similar.
Good you got a diff finally.
It IS an 8" or properly a 200mm diff so that's confirmed now.

More of the sheetmetal parts to do the chassi rail mounts are done and I just spoke with my man Sean about how we really have a drop dead date to get the square beams done by time Paddy comes so worry about the cage and there will be a way to mount the diff prettyu soon.
I missed calling the Laser cut palce for the sump guard center support parts but thewy said they should be cut by tomorrow, then to get them welded up.
I'm doing one for you Grant and for Paddy, Scott, Skye, me, and one more for the shelf or two for the shelf.

So stand by soon for more panic calls for dough.

Grant, do you have the front sumpguard mount/tow eye/jack points or didya sell them?

What's the ballpark on the rear beam costs going to be? Will it take use the stock trailing arms? I still need to hack up the mounting points on mine a bit to get them to sit right...

Hey, John I want one too. A square beam to mount a supra diff that is? What is the cost looking to be?

There are so so many good roads in Colorado. Problem is we have no organizers and not real friendly to the idea forest service managers. We were mostly in Pike National Forest on Sunday. Found a pretty fun road. Here's a Google Earth pic of a little bit of it. The whole road is around 30 miles of this type of terrain. Some big exposures, a few rough spots, some really smooth spots, and lots of elevation changes.

ps, John - I just booked 3 weeks off in August to do nothing but try and get the car going, so we may need a good deal of room in the back seat...

I sold them but don't plan to replace them, at least not soon. I start school in a month so am going to be back to mostly poor college kid.

Any estimate on what beam is going to cost? I'm likely in if I can afford it.

Did you make up some of the alternator relocation brackets yet? I do need that. A 90 degree rotated upper would be best for the intercooler.

And last but importantly, do you have any of the T5 tranny mounts and how much dough for them? The T9 is trashed after the last drive so have to upgrade it sooner than was planned.

And how much for the chassis mount stuff? I'm on a tight budget and it's only going to get worse, so the more I can estimate now the more of these items I can actually get when the time comes. School and two jobs starting in the fall. Bleh.

Hey numb nuts, just make convenient monthy payments.

The beam design is, after a LONG evening on Moday, nailed down as is the revised diff mount.
Should have the first one VERY soon.
I will have an extra set of the skidplate mounts so just get them and don't snivel, you'll be a rich doctor one day!!!

As for the center supports, they're PROMISED for tomorrow.
Grant you want to weld up yours yourself and save$$$$???

Sure. They'll be easier to box and ship probably like that anyhow.

Doctor? No way. I'll be the math nerd that tells the doctor that he can't take 17 people from the UP, feed them Lutfisk for a week, discover that none of them got the flu, so therefore, Lutfisk is a perfect natural vaccine for the flu.

Okay. I really need to call you. Maybe I'll get a chance tonight.

Only works with narrow genetic subtypes commonly called "Square-heads" and "Herring-Chokers".
