Gearing Question
July 22, 2006 04:11PM
Hi guys, looking at gearing options for the Mini -- there appear to be plenty of choices available, I put charts together for both the stock ratios and the wide ratio Quaife set -- wondered if you guys might have any recommendations as to whether going to the upgraded gearset would be worthwhile.

Car will have roughly 100hp, 100ft/lbs, weight ~1500lbs (plus crew).

Thanks, Ted

Hey guys, figured you couldn't read the message as it lacked X-Ratty references smiling smiley

So...

Here's the same chart for XR4Ti gearing.

Ted, your choices look awfully good. Nice graphic charts.
It would really be fun, no doubt. You going to get some nice diff??

Where's you get the calcultor thingie with all the nicve colors?
I want to plug in the desireable T5 box and 4.3 diff figures.

Calculator can be found here:

http://www.gearboxman.co.uk/inforatios.html

It's an Excel template that does all the calcs for you on the fly -- nifty.

I've got a cam and pawl LSD (ZF?) but I'm probably going to FleaBay it and pick up a Gripper, plate style, diff which seems to be the current favorite of the UK Mini guys.

On the street, the stock 3rd gear feels like a life sentence, and first is too low for anything but pulling away -- having never driven on gravel in anger for an extended period I wasn't sure if that would be an issue worth worrying about.

Cheers, Ted

Here's the XR with what I *think* is the correct ratio T5 box we're talking about...
