Volvo Shocks and Springs
January 27, 2006 01:12PM
For my '79 240, my question is, how strong can a stock/sport suspension be, and what options are out there? I'm trying to find an alternative to a full rally suspension, JVAB is what I would be buying, had I the coin, but for now, I am looking for something easier to handle, so I can at least just get a rally in this summer.
These Springs are what got me thinking.

Now, I might totally be off the mark here, but I'm just curious if those would last a rally or two.
I know what everyone says about the entry fee being saved by having a tough car and finishing. But I won't have any cash left for an entry fee at all, if I was to go buy true rally suspenders.
I'll be going into Gr2, with a basically stock car.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Taro, ever thought about talking to JVAB about installment plans?
I know that right now one LeGassy boy from the other Vancouver, one Rare-bit boy from the other Vancouver, and one LeGassy boy from Ontario are making the purchace in 3-4 lumps to spread the pain since JVAB just hates the idea of folks doing the thing he once did: spending MORE for lesser stuff cause one part would break, you replace that, then the next part would break, so you replace that, then the first part would break again!!!! On in 18 months you get FARTHER away from saving for the better stuff.
I'd give him a call, he's not the complete loon that some might think.

Of course, you could opt to MISS one event andf there you have made more than the difference in price.
You won't die to miss one event, and then EVERY event there after you'll have sooooooper bitchin stuff.

Say do you have any REAR used Bilsteins now?

I highly doubt I could be ready for MT, though PFR should be easy enough to get to.
I had a look at the prices you sent me a few months back, and they look a whole lot cheaper then the first time I looked at them, just have more to compare them to now perhaps.
I appreciate the idea of an installment plan, though I generally like to buy things when I have cash in hand.
I will have to make up a buget for things like seats harnesses computer and cage. Any ideas on the amount of steel to build a cage? What sort of money is involoved?
I think I will travel down to seatac and talk things over with you in person, and see what its all about, if that would work. Probably in a month or so, when my school and work shedule is a bit more relaxed.
Cheers

Hey Taro, I usually prefer to just hand things over full stop but I know when you're paying out things all over the place it does help to spread the pain.
As for a cage, I think that there are plenty of places to do cages, some just take FOR-FUCKIN-EVER, and don't do what you carefully draw out and some do things relatively quickly, routinely double or tripple their quoted price, and still don't do the cage as instructed, shown with drawing, photos and samples, so I have been doing some work with a guy I've known for 20+ years who has built all sorts of stuff including fuel dragster and Pro-stock drag cars and will deliver, and do things as i show him, even if he has lots of ideas.
Let's organize a swing by him when you come down, he's just minutes off I5.

Odo---order a Brantz InterII, and it does everything you need and is super quick to set and reset and clear red lights. I'm an "Artur-ized" Brantz guy and have supplied Derek, Skye, Scott and a bunch of other guys.

Intervom--- get "Greytronics", excellent stuff, very good prices.
This stuff is the "Clubman Standard" in the UK.
Don't think too much about Terror-trip or Terror-phone, Terror-phones are a cheap copy of an early "Greytronics" design right doewn to a fault in the am circuit.
It just so happens I am also "Arturized" Greytronics guy.

The big question is who's Artur and does being "Arthur-ized" resemble being "Rogered"?

I ended up buying the Terra trip... Seemed to be what I could find in Canada on short notice (5 days before PFR).

I'm not sure of the model, but it has a nice aux. output that plugs into a video camera. I did that but with the absence of a tach on top of the dash... it made for a couple of hours of viewing that no one cared for except the two of us who were in the car. I could probably edit the highlights down to... say 90 seconds. The downside to the input from the intercom is that it eliminates the "ambiant" sound of rocks and the sound of the motor reving.

Is there a way to record and get for the "ambiant" sound as well as the communication of the driver yelling at the co-driver ?

Taro... for a suit you may consider contacting Leaf Racewear. They're cheap, and since they're a manufacturer of suits they'll custom make one for you. The nice woman on the other end of the phone stayed on the line as I measured myself bit by bit. AND... they turnaround time was only 2 days. (it was also the fall, slow season) Being 6'5" it was nice not to have to buy a stock suit that would be a tight fit for Tom Arnold on the waist.

Fire suits
January 28, 2006 12:23AM
A certain famous rally driver, recently struck down in his prime by a mysterious case of rabies, donated a fire suit to my rally cause. I think the orange suit will go nicely with my bright green engine and white car.

What is the date of Doo-Wop? can't seem to find info on it, not in feb anyway. If I can make the dates work, then maybe cruise by JVLs and head on to the rally from there, is it in Shelton? If so thats on the way to Port Angeles is it not?
It would be great to talk to the cage guy, and no doubt you have some plans for a 240 cage eh? least get the groundwork layed out since that'll be the first thing to do, while I'm building engine and such.
Man, I so want to head to Doo-wop now, too many months between PFR and Rocky. I'm definately up for a weekend of Rally and Beer!
Thanks guys

No dude its out on the coast straight west from Olympia.
Aberdeen, like the other cold rainy place only with _different_ colorful characters.
Bring your RAIN GEAR and a "sleepy-bag".
Maybe we can help out Adam "The is Not a Transit" young crazy deffo GpF/Rally anarchist type, like lending him my van and we nudge his Toiletta Commodah AE86 with our toe now and then and shrung and say cryptic theings with bad accents like "de suspendöös is proken!"

Yeah, that's my thought, the more planning the smoother the execution.

Awesome, thanks guys, I'm supposed to go camping that weekend, but, I might just have to change things around a little, I'm really curious what the US rallies are like.
I've got Live fire training the 11-12th, and my buddy needs so much lead time to do anything, or else he gets stressed, but I'll get him drunk tonight and hammer out some dates for a trip to the cabin.
Is Kevin the guy with the rough looking AE86 that is doing the autodesign program? If so I met and chatted to him up at PFR, had a brief look at your suspenders as well.
You have a ball park figure of what a cage costs to have built? Just an idea so I can stop being curious for a few moments.
Cheers
