Lets say I wanted to build a car...
June 03, 2011 06:15AM
So, I am getting antsy waiting for a used rally car to pop up on the atlantic coast. So I am looking at alternate options.

http://grm.racingjunk.com/category/84/Improved_Touring/post/2210432/Mark-1-VW-Rabbit.html

Would something like this be a waste of time, or would it cut down on some fab costs? I'm sure the cage would have to be cut out and replaced, but how is my thinking on this? Good idea, or waste of time?

In my wealth of inexperience of going click-clacky on the interwebs, I'd say this has several things against it:

1) Cage needs replacing

2) Rabbit (Mk1 Golf) shell is reputed to be flimsy crap for rally

3) You're going to have to rewire it back to street legal. Actually with VW wiring, that may be an advantage.

4) Suspension will need replacing regardless

It's a road race car, not a rally car. You MIGHT be able to make it work for Global RallyCar Rally Cross XXX or whatever it's called, but I look at it and think about calling and asking if he'd sell it for $400 and do a separate bill of sale for the cage to be an evil cheater Lemons car. But I can already picture Judge Phil/Murilee giving me 100 penalty laps for that kind of BS....

Call up Tim Oneil. He's got logbooked, caged VWs he's trying to get rid of now that he's switched to the Fiestas. Prices were reasonable last time we chatted. Like $10k for a Golf, plus a bazillion spares and possibly a whole extra car!

Beyond a waste of time.

Find a shell out here, get it caged out here, make a deal with JV on suspension and then drive or tow it back there.

Why waste of time:
Rabbit. Short, tall. slammed they can go around smooth corners.
Stock motor
stock box
stock brake
unknown--likely shit---suspension
shit cage
TWOTHOUSANDFIVE HUNDRED dollars!!!!!!! for nuthin!!!!

Look at some of the ads in AJ Johnsons thread. Or in the for sale.
Turbo Volvos and Xratties that stock make more HP than you have budget for and twice the TORQUE than a n.a. VW can ever make regardless of budget, that allow you to buy even MORE acceleration via short final drive for anywhere from $12 to $130---

show me a VW equivalent ring and pinion for $12 to $130.
And 200 ft/lbs of torque for a coupla hundred bucks (the price of a car)

Both those cars can be plenty of fun in n.a. form while meeting the foolish, hypocritical, ill thought out, stooopid Rally America rules.

Get with the Futre (that's a culturally sophisticated reference and "homage", not a typo)

That's what the F in US Group F stands for.

maybe you have to tow a bit from non rust belt are.
Big deal.
Get ON IT.

Ya know Gene, with everything considered---especially the cost of good rust free shells, that's looking smarter and smarter.
Now if we could get more peeps on the Volvo 240= Escort for North America thing, we could do bigger production runs and have shells lined up in white, just like the barber shop: Next!

You sound sure of that, i believe that is an intranets rumor to be completely honest, when i was ther for the TONR i saw 1 logbooked GTi and it was competing. all of the practice cars have skid plates and seats... contact Kathy M at TON and she will tell you the same.

Yeah, the car, I know is overpriced, i meant it more as an example... I like RWD better. Anyway, Thanks for the input. Just getting fed up with waiting.

10G is a bit of a payout for me at once. I've finished my last project and wanted something capable that with some work could become a reliable rallyer for the (probably) one nearby event i could afford a year (not counting rallycross/autocross/whatever to pass time as I see fit)

And as for the "Get on it!" I'm trying damnit! Hell, you may remember, you sold me on the 240's almost a year ago. The fact that most are all rust-holed, auto and 3,500 here in NY (damned hipsters) keeps me looking elsewhere. Grumble...

Yeah the hipster "drive a funky Volvo crowd" is kinda a pain in more ways than one, and the Intrawebs forums are a multiplier effect for bad info..
Just was on a thread on Turbobricks with some ex-spurts advising some poor sap who asked about making 250 bhp on a B21 "you need a Holset" and "You need 650cc/min injectors and a big cam and a 250 l/hr Wal, bro!!!"

Fucking idiot kids.

I'd bet for around 5to6k we could get you a running, caged, SooperBitchin suspended car. Massive power and fame and fortune will follow as you can afford ....or find the big sponsors.
