LOL. i'll admit to having a turbo justy..i still do! It's just in lots and lots of pieces.

One thing you are going to need is a clutch. Mine slipped horribly with the turbo. Entice me enough and i may even feel like parting with it....Stiffer PP, Kevlar Disc, and a lightened Flywheel..all custom done. If/when my just ever gets put back together, it won't have a 3 banger in it....

As for gears, it would not take all that much work to make a standard Suby R160 diff fit in the back i dont think. And they are available all the way up to 4.44. The front..i have no idea.

To be perfectly honest, i never really did push the car hard enough to see if the gears would break.

Chris,

Yes, you may recall our clutch conversations from years back.

I did find a decent clutch then, not quite as bling as yours, but it holds pretty good.

I managed to nearly 10 pounds off that huge anchor of a flywheel back then...

John, I have no idea bout that 5.2 thing... honestly I just cut and paste that off wiki... Not sure I noticed it until now. The final rear diff is 3.7, or closely confirmed by spinning and counting rotations.

Yes, fitting a standard suby rear is no problem... it would be dealing with the front end that would complicate matters. Chris, did you ever tear down a transmission? I have not opened one up yet. Any decent parts in your bins????

Edit: yeah the Quebec boys say they never broke gears... occasionally axles in the first gen cars. Syncros don't last worth . but who cares bout those? Kinda sounds like a cool dog box when you shift.

Matt

Sounds like the important thing you need to find out is the ratio of the transfer gears in the center diff. Obviously not 1:1 if the front is 5.2 and the rear is 3.7, if that's what's going on here.

Matt,

I never did get into one of the transmissions.

There are a bunch of good parts in my bins for sure..let me know what you want/need and i'll have a good look, most of the stuff is pretty burried, but accessible.

I do have the Subaru Factory Service Manual, i'll look up the specs on the transmission for you.

Maybe scan some power path piccies and post 'em so we know where its going on the way to where.

Just at first glance, if you could put in 4.44 in the rear gear, that would be a very useful improvement. With 100 HP, and looking at the gear ratios, I think you will spend a lot of itme back and forth between 2nd and 3rd with the 3.7.

I did a bit of searching for a transmission diagram...

These are some crappy scans I found on the weeb...

FYI, there is no center diff. The Justy is 4wd when engaged... there has been lots of talk by many of adding center diffs, usually viscous types. Some folks dream off puting the Haldex rear in them, hmmm that's worth more then the whole car! Anyway, I don't see the point, too much engineering for little outcome, we're talking an econo-racer here...

Here's a pic with the whole box, lower right.

Here's the front diff:

http://www.dustysjustys.com/IPL/JFIG190-1.jpg

The "transfer" notice the little dogged gear #39... vacuum actuated.

The rear facing drive

Honestly, I'm not sure there is much worth pursuing here in the gearbox. Unless someone thinks I can find a front diff that matches, and we can up the final ratios.
I guess later I can tear down a spare transmission and measure. I only have one good first gen box, but several 2nd gen. There's not a real big difference, as the changes are in 4th and 5th, and um, well, yeah... those are transit gears.

You still need to know what the transfer gear ratio is. Those pictures don't give any specs.

Yes, understood. I was just trying to give a general idea of the layout.

My guess is there may not be much available (in regards to options...), but I will keep searching for a FSM that has ratios and other such specs, and possibly open up a transmission when I get a chance. Maybe some-ting will fit!

Back to the cam and intake issue.

What specs do I need to post of the motor for the motor minds to give me an idea of what to get a cam ground to, and thoughts on that intake runner length (or is "just what fits" s'good nuff)

On a good news note! I spent the last two days moving into the new rented garage space! First time I have shop space since '05!

Congrats muchachito mio on el garage.

Lissen, dun't worry about any theoretical runner hooo ha. It ain't length its volume and specifically it calculating the gas speed inside...Tooo slow and "tumble" or "swirl" ain't generated , result : slow burn, ping, unhappiness and conversely too fast and you can effectively sling the gas-0-line out of the incoming stream causing it to puddle up, not burn, with low power, leanness, ping and death as a result.

You ain't ready to measure air velocity are you?
Me s'neather.

'sides all that hooo-ha is about making some resonation and upping peak torque. You hain't got no torques, and with that thing you'll be a) full throttle or b) slammed shut throttle.

What we can measure is compression ratio and we can look at the combustion chamber--well if we could we could.

Gimme picies Matt! more piccies! and dimensions. Talking with no dimesnions is just flapping the jaws, piccies of and dimensions of EVERYTHING?
Rod bolt size?
head bolt size?
Stock cam timing,?
CAM ACTUATION method?

Okay,

This week I'll get some pics of the head at least, get some die-men-shunes.

From the Justy site

http://subarujusty.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=everything&thread=4131&page=1

Looks like the front diff is driven right of the driven shaft of the transmission, which is a complete unit. Lots of cu$tom parts to change that!?

Cheers

I know you need help but if you have to take recourse to The FSM all the time maybe you should think of another car.
Why would the creator of the WHOLE Universe give a shit about your gearing.

Maybe you could look in the workshop manual 'stead a praying to pasta based deitiesdrinking smiley.

Damit John, I would look in the workshop manual labor, but the tranny 'tis still with the car in another province!

Ahh, but the telepathy that comes from being the pasta based deity could help!

Yes, I should think about another car... that has occurred to me in a few dreams.
