ECU options
September 23, 2006 10:35AM
I know that folks have been talking about the DIY Dodge thing lately, but is anyone running standalone EM in their cars? Link, Haltech, Hydra? I'm assuming you'd have to buy a crank trigger wheel to use any of these.

Cheers! John

John what I've said to all the boys is 175 bhp and 195ft/lbs if combined with a good gearbox and about a 4.3 rear ratio and just a Cossie intercooler and 3" exhaust ought to be good enough to have fun with for a while.

Then there's the large air flow meter or "VAM" in Norte Americano Fordese found lurking on later 2.3 Thunderchickens which combined with their ECU and a charge air temp sensor gives 205 bhp and 235 ft/lbs, not too bad and very easy to drive (and get that power to the ground------remember you're 2 wheel drive now).

I have thought the nice simple, well supported, like Megasquirt would be the hot ticket.

There are some people on TurboFord who have some big $$$ units like Haltech in their cars, but I think the most popular standalone choice is Megasquirt at the present time (since we're all cheap). There's a guy who makes a really nice crank trigger setup for the 2.3T on TF and sells it for like $50 USD, appearently making the MS install quite simple. Just look in the stickies in the For Sale section...

I hear you guys. I've used a wire-in link plus, and it's an easy unit to install and tune. Sometimes they can be found for $400 or so.

I may go the megasquirt route and get a crank trigger. I don't think the megasquirt can do anti-lag?

I realize that 500bhp would be fun on tarmac, but digging trenches in the dirt without forward motion wouldn't be much fun! ;-)

Cheers! John

You may wanna contact Jon Rood, he is the Megasquirt wizard.

In the Galant I am using a G1 ECU with a chip that we wrote and burned coupled with a MASC TRE fuel controller and monitoring system. It took an unnamed person a lot of work to break the Mitsu codes, taking an unmolested bone stock Mitsu chip as a base, we wrote our own map. We are very close to burning a chip with ALS aswell. It really is not rocket science, a hefty retard based on a specific point on engine speed + air coming in the plenum from EGR that is not EGR anymore + add fuel = ALS

Some things are actually easier done than explained though I hope I am not confusing anybody.

John, you get the Cosworth .48 a/r turbine housing and 3" and I assure youy you don't need to think about anti-lag.
It really is the ideal thing for doing what we're doing, Ford really intended the car to work good in GpN as well as GpA so they put a turbo unit on which works like its supposed to: early spool, instant response, and pass the volume of exhaust thru so the turbine housing is not a bottleneck.

The Japanese really intended to make the 5000 homologation cars so that they could challenge for overall results in GpA, and aside from Misterbitchy with the Evos most didn't work so good with the stock turbos.
I've done the Cossie units now on 2 Misterbitchies, 2 Volvos 2300 8v, a Merkur, and my own Cossie 4x4.
ALL spool early, quick and hard.
Its a thing of beauty.

So you open the EGR valve (pulling from atmosphere, not exhaust manifold) as a way to work around the need for a throttle kicker? Neeeat.

Are those vacuum type valves or fulley electric? I can't see a vacuum type valve working under boost, although arguably if you have boost, you won't really *need* antilag...

you can find all sorts of "anti-lag valves", as they are called, at the junkyard. of course the manufacturers call them throttle bypass or idle control valves smiling smiley i think the one i have came off a volvo, and has about a 1/2" opening.

Yeah, that's pretty sweet.

Most cars have stepper motor type idle air valves. All Fords from recent memory have linear motor idle control valves, so you just need to apply the right voltage and they snap open. I've been using them for... other... purposes.

I run MegaSquirt on my Golf. I have been doing it for almost 2 years now. Not a single hickup.
Recently updated the firmware and fiddled with launch control/flat shift option which works like a charm. I currently tinkering with the knock sense option, but that's a bit more tricky.

I wish I had video of the time we hooked up the bypass valve into the exhaust manifold. Lift throttle, super retard, dump a bit of fuel, and bypass opens with pressurized air going into exhaust manifold. It was scary violent anti-lag. Thought the shop windows were going to break.

I want antilag, but really only for Park Expose/Fermes. But I'm a show off.
