EGT sensor placement?
October 07, 2006 08:46AM
Mine is placed just behind the turbo. I was talking to a friend of mine and he recommended moving it in front of the turbo at the collector. Reason: He says the exhaust turbine housing will displace about 300deg. and therefore give an inaccurate reading. If this is correct,I show a max. of 1300deg. does this mean I'm actually around 1600? Any thoughts?

I've always seen them installed in the manifold before the turbo. In the Chrylser 420A I4, cylinder 4 is known to be the one to go lean for whatever reason, so most of the EGTs I've seen go in the #4 runner.

its not so much that the housing dissapates heat, but that there is a huge pressure change across the turbo (thats what makes it work). and the law of thermodynamics says that because of the pressure drop, there will also be a large change in temperature. its quite likely alot more than 300 deg.
