Well I think I finally settled on a set of 40mm mikuni cv carbs off a 1 liter yamaha R-1. They support 150hp on that bike.
Pros of this setup should be:
Easy to connect with coupling hoses onto the bottom of a hacked off stock manifold (save ~$200)
Linkage is all there (save ~$100)
So I'll basically need ignition (got it already) and a fuel pressure regulator.
Tuning should be interesting. John, you guys at the polaris shop know cv carbs well?
I've got a carb syncher from messing with the SU's and Zenith-puke-bergs on my dad's mg and tr6.

Carl, those carbs are stupid easy to fix. Also, I have jetting to go to like 300 hp on a 2 stroke at the shop.

Why did you cut wires?

If your car was CE 1, the thing to do was go to go to CE 2 and then plug and play the engine harness. Pretty straight forward process. You have to monkey a bit at the fuel pump relay (easy), but that's it.

If it was CE2 already and you cut stuff you may have fucked up, lol. No worries, all's well that ends well. Carbs are fun.

Car was ce-1. I had a cis-e motronic setup from a passat. So I removed the engine bay harness from the car, seperated out the cis-e harness and cut it out. Then reinstalled the harness and spliced in the motronic stuff. Car no start, me cry. Time for carbies!

After doing a bit or research I found that those R1 carbs are downdraft, so I've got my eye on a few sets of side draft gixxer 1100 carbs. Maybe I'll actually get something in the next few days tongue sticking out smiley

Hey Carl

Cleaning out the basement, I've got a set of four 40mm Keihin carbs off an indeterminate crotch rocket -- not got much gore on them -- freebies if you're interested. I'm over in Detroit once or twice a week, not exactly sure where you are, but...

Oh poo! Are those flatslides?
I got a set of gsxr carbs off ebay, but they turned out to be 36mm. Too small I think.

I'm about 10 hours from Detroit, up in the UP! I could easily pay you something to ship them if you'd be so kind.

Hmmn, dunno what flatsides are...

My guess is if flatsides are super cool aftermarket racing carbs, then no. These look like run of the mill factory bits.

lemme see if I can scrounge up some piccies...

Take a look at the pix and shoot me your address if you think you can use them -- I'll be in Michigan Monday and I'll try to remember to ship'em out.

I'll take payment in karma or future beer chits.

Ah cool!!! Those are CV carbs, maybe from a kawasaki of some sort? I dunno. Looks like they're a little bit of a downdraft carb, judging by the angle of the float chamber. I bet I can make them work!

How much of a PITA is it to make bike carbs work on a more normal-ish engine?

I plan to find out!
I know its been done before, one of my friend's brothers has a set of 36 or 38mm mikuni's on his 8v gti. It took him a while to get the jetting right, but the actual mounting and plumbing is pretty straight forward because they just connect to a hacked off stock manifold with rubber coupler tubes.

The benifit I see to bike carbs is less cost. You dont need a $200 manifold and $100 linkage setup to buy, a set of decent bike carbs can be had on ebay for $80, vs 3-400 for a set of dcoe's.

The jetting will be the hard part, but a couple of my friends are getting wideband controllers so maybe I can borrow and I need to get some tiny drill bits to drill out the jets.

Those are side drafts, just some funky angled ones. They should work nicely with a cut manifold.
Also I do have jets for those.

And Carl, do you happen to know of any wiring harnesses for a 88ish GTI?

I have the one from my car, but I'm going to need that.
I do have one from an 86 8v scirocco, its probably different but you're welcome to any of it if you need it.

I think with those carbs angled it should come out nice so that they're not sucking down hot radiator air. perhaps a nice shaker hood is in order?

Ya, my car has a short in the running lights, again. So I have a engine side harness that I'm stripping down, but chances are its in the car.

And if you do a shaker, you need a big ass firebird to complete the look. Maybe a Bert Renolds 'stache too.
