I know, I know...don't ask internet idiots to validate your cage design...but before send pics to Mike Hurst or something else suitable qualified to describe how far from reality my cage is from receiving a logbook, I thought I would give you folks a chance to weigh in...smiling smiley

Still to add are sill bars, seat mounts, etc.

Cage is 1 3/4 DOM if ya couldn't tell.

Looks pretty good to me. Can't get any of the pics to supersize because my compuer is weird.

If you'd door X is in 1.75" you don't HAVE to have a sill bar, but I'd do one anyhow.

Also, do you have anything between the lower part of the main hoop? From one side to the other. We usually do either compression bars or a straight bar and tie it into the tunnel so that in case of a side impact, it has to deform the tunnel as well meaning more of the car absorbing force in order to move in on passenger.

Also, do you have a cross or X bar from the top of the main hoop to the rear stays? Again, not required, but I like to have them. Of course, when my finished cage is up you'll get to hear lots of comments about how I've overdone it and pointless bars and weight and blah. But we tend to look at WRC cars for design and what they are doing and put bars in that have a point and that make us feel safer. My car will be close to the older Focus WRC car designs.

Grant-
The door X is 1.75. The two bars pass each other instead of intersecting...a liiiitle funky and I may still change that.

There is currently one diagonal from the upper main hoop to the rear shock tower. I may still X that out...not sure. I've got loads of tubing left.

Last night as I was laying in bed dreaming about roll cages, I envisioned a tube in compression between the main hoop legs at floor level. Seems like a good idea.

There will also be a couple of shorty tubes running rearward and down at a slight angle from the rear shock towers to the middle of the back floor....right above the stock fuel tank.

So, what you're saying is that if the door bars are 1.75 and X'ed, I not reguired to have a sill bar?

Not sure what the RA rules are this week...but I think if you just follow the FIA 253 pics, you can get away w/o a sill bar. CARS logbook FTW?

You have to have one continuous door bar that is 1.75"

I've got some easier to understand FIA rules available for download off my website.

http://www.nocoastmotorsports.net/fiacagerules2006-oct23.pdf

An X that has at least one bar in 1.75"X.095 DOM that is continuous passes tech and fulfills 8.2.1.4

Anything it says 'for cars homologated as from 01/01/2005 _____ is required' is required for Rally America rules. So you have to have a roof X or V. You have to have the WRC A pillar support bar (straight bar from the bottom a pillar foot to the bend junction at top of main hoop).

Don't read the rules regarding footplates. They're confusing. Just make sure you used at least 3 mm thick steel plate and you have plenty of it at each foot. At least 120 cm^2, which is a bit more than 18 in^2. So a 4-5" X 4-5" plate at each spot.

Grant, your compliation of the FIA regs is what Brett and I printed out and scribbled on over the weekend! Good stuff!

Now, where are you reading in there that the WRC A pillar bar is compulsary? I see it in the optional section.

8.2.2.5.3
A reinforcement as in Drawing 253-17B may be added on each side of the front rollbar between the upper corner of the windscreen and the base of this rollbar.
This reinforcement may be bent on condition that it is rectilinear in side view and that the angle of the bend does not exceed 20°.
For cars homologated as from 01/01/2006, this reinforcement is mandatory on each side of the front rollbar if dimension «A» (see Drawing 253-4) is greater than 200 mm.

The dimension they refer to is greater than 200 mm on almost every car except maybe a Mini or old VW bug. It's from the perpendicular to the sill point of the upper windshield bend to the front foot.

Ahhhh. I'll have to pull a tape on that this weekend and see...I'll bet it's close though. The windshield on a saab is pretty upright.

So unlike past SCCA and RA cage regs, I see that gussets are optional in the FIA. Is that correct?

Except for on the main hoop X, which has to be gusseted with at least 1 mm thick steel. All other gussets are optional.

SAABS don't need no steenking roll cage! Their shells are tough enough, as-is.
Git-her-done. Get a logbook fer it and run it at Perce-Neige.

Hey Tedneck, as I've proved in the past, I can spread a lot more goodwill at PN if I'm unfettered.

For instance, when I have my own rally car there, I'm unable to begin spending American $$'s on fine Canadian consumables (Blues) until AFTER I blow up the tranny or crash.

"Doing" Perce-Neige as a free-agent-crewdog gives me plenty of opportunities to:

Have beer and Poutine for breakfast..every morning.
Shut down pracitice stages.
Have beer and Poutine for lunch.
Recce the Route de Maire as many times as I want.
Have beer and venison for dinner.
Make posters and signs for the Chloe fan club.
Drink more beer and watch ART TV.
So dougnuts in the service van.
Drink poutine and eat beer <hick-up> at the sledshed.
Follow rally cars into telco poles on transits with the service van.
...and drink beer.

how do people deal with engine rock (front motor mounts)
in them saabs

who has a turbo 16 valve, with louver's ME.

brakes are funky as hell, bite great, but late pedal

if i put my hip above the rear wheels and give it a bump,
the whole chassis moves while the tires stay put.
thinking rear wheel bearings.

good luck

A few updates...

Got much of the undercoating off a la Death Ray Gun. Welded some more stuff, made some gusset templates, drank much beer.
