Few more cage pics. Blake was working on mounting the codriver's seat yesterday. After that the sill bar will be taken back out so the seat mounts can be fully welded. Once the seats are mounted we can figure out where the steering column will end up. Then it is just harness bars and a few gussets. Pin stands will also happen while at primitive. Then I'm lucky enough to be trading some landscape construction for bodywork and paint prep. Go team!

looking pretty good.
i'm assuming you will be using floor mount pedals and foot rest back from the firewall a bit , seeing the seat location? the reason i ask is i was just in a wreck in my 240 daily. i lost a outer tie rod at 45 and a second later was stoped by a tree. the tree contacted the car right out side the passenger frame rail , it colapsed the wheel and suspention almost a foot into the lower section of the firewall. might be something to consider. the only thing i dont like is the sheet metal and bracing being removed from the rear quarter on the inside. yeh yolvos are tough , but the 2 door is soft in that are compared to a 4 door. you have lost the outer "cage" around your new one now. now a side impact has half the "crumple zone" before it contacts the cage. for side impacts i would suggest fitting a lower bar and center bars in the main hoop. and with the b pillar losing a lot of strength , i would be afraind of losing the door in a bad rollover and posibly having it come into the passenger compartment now. i know its rare, but i have seen several volvos lose their doors and one with it impaled between the a and b pilar. i think the lose of strenght to shave weight was not a good call.

Gah! Every time I post something on here it's like going to trial. No fun. Sorry Fidel but that is my choice and it happens to be the same choice that many other rally car builders have chosen to make. The shell is much much stronger than your dd. stitched everywhere, 1 inch tubing at the sills. I fail to see how cutting out the structure for the backseat armrest is going to make my doors fly off. The 45s from the main hoop to the half laterals is stitched to the b-pillar and I could add more and more bars to the cage but really it would be safest to just park the damned thing. Floor mounted pedal box, extended column, and stick. This all puts you closer to the strongest part of the cage. It is also the reason for door bars that some might consider too high. For side impacts I think the seats are in the best possible location. Eric, the boxes do not have any interior structure but are made out of so pretty beefy gage plate. Yet another way to die in horrific fashion Zap zap my ass... |
