No rod caps so the piston hits the head and breaks??

Do forged pistons not contain explosives?

What those guys tend to forget, is that there is a shit load of a difference between a dyno queen doing a 20 sec pull or two, and the occasional drag race, and then doing a full out rally with several minutes at a time, at full speed.

Stock MAY be fine for dyno queens... proper motorsport is a different matter.

They don't forget, they never knew.
Typed words on a screen look just like any other typed words....and I know on some forums they guys who have never assembled 1 motor of any sort much less selected parts and assembled 1 real motor and that never prevents them from writing with unblinking certainty "The stock bottom end is good for __________________hp, no problems" (fill in any random figure you want.)

Yeah but is the 510 making 400+hp?

Dudes race OEM Honda internal engines in Honda Challenge races all the time with no exploding pistons. If there is a problem, it's more likely a rod is going to go through the block because they're reving a motor with a 7000 redline up to 9000+. Which common sense should tell you the need to beef stuff up.

The guys in the 510 weren't running that crazy of a motor, right? I don't see why a stock piston couldn't hold up to it or they even needed to go for all forged internals.

One of my friends does track days... he figures that one track weekend with his RX-7 is like forty (40) years of drag racing, when it comers to HP/time.

Always kills me when people talk about their DRAG engines and say yes, a D16 Honda is good for 400hp "all day long", stock VW rods handle 8800rpm easy, there's no reason you can't make at least 350hp from a nonturbo 13B...

I'd like to see a 1.6 Honda make 400hp for more than 60 seconds without being able to pour the bottom end out of the drag plug afterwards!

Yea, drag racers never realize what is involved in building an engine that will last, not to mention a tune that will keep the engine together. I showed a friend of mine who drag races an in-car video of another friend running up Mt. Washington. The car is pretty slow, but for the 7:32 he takes to go up the hill he's at WOT for about 90% of the time. Imagine a drag engine taking full load and rpms up a hill for 7 minutes? And I see people cringe during a 15 second dyno pull.....

Mike Whitman brought his Escort Cossie to most of the Colorado Hill Climb Association events. He said something along the lines of, "If the engine holds up here and doesn't overheat, it will be able to handle any rally."
I was able to run more boost without overheating at Rally Colorado then I was at any of the 2-3 mile long hill climbs.
Which is why I'm not sure why Dave Kern isn't running the BMW this weekend at Temple Canyon. smiling smiley
