Snap ring pliers for TD04 compressor housing?
June 28, 2012 01:11PM
Must go snap a pic, but it appears none of my normal snap ring pliers are good for taking the giant ring off a Mitsu turbo.

Wondering if anyone has some suggestions for a tool to add to the collection.

Thanks
Jason

If my memory is right, I used that :

Could not make it with "regular" snap ring pliers but was easy enough with that.

you can pre-book hospital space for having babies. why not for grevious bodily injuries?

No idea how big we're talking (turbos have snap rings? who knew?), but the Craftsman "Qtr-Turn" snap ring pliers (maybe this link will work: http://www.sears.com/craftsman-qtr-turn-reg-convertible-retaining-ring-pliers/p-00947383000P?prdNo=7&blockNo=7&blockType=G7) handled the ~3" rings for the wheel bearings on my civic with ease.

Naw they're manly circlips those bastids. You need something with strong and fat points, 45 degree to dodge things with.. Tool Town has some KD ones that will work, they're $27 and they're like a screw jack. They have replaceable tips that also fir the bigger $63 ratcheting things i mentioned earlier...

It's not so much the span but just the thickness of the things, they are strong.

Ah, I've found the screw version.. I like the looks of that for this application.

Haven't found the ratchety KD version yet, haven't seen one in their current catalog yet so maybe they discontinued it.

And yeah.. thick, and probably a little stuck, rings are more the issue. I've got a few sets of pliers that fit, but none that seem to want to open it.

I'm pretty sure the last one I did I got a set of these:

http://www.harborfreight.com/11-inch-90-angle-long-reach-pliers-39539.html

and used the angle grinder to shape the tips so they fit real nice.

I had a real angry TD05h compressor and had to have a buddy on the angle part with another set of pliers.

I've used a pair of nail sets and pliers (similar to the ice picks)Not super sketchy, but just sketchy enough to warrent beer. It was a long time ago, with lots of pharmaceuticals in between.

I can still count up to 20 with fingers and toes.

I like to play with cars, it's very inappropriate.
