Do I already have a 4.25FD ?
February 24, 2007 05:05PM
I am doing some calculations and coming up with 4.25 final drive results.

Tires 195-50-15
Tranny is a 4K assuming with a standart 0.89 fifth
55mph @ 3200 rpm (The speedo is not currently hooked but PO told me 3200=55. Seems about right coz going as fast as hwy traffic at 50-55 mphish)

Thanks,
oscar

4k should have a 3.94 or something.

I am aware that the 4k should have 3.94 but than the calculation would equal to over 60 miles in 5th at 3200
I was wondering if it was already swapped. Is there another way to tell without cracking the box open?

If the 4k came out of an eco-diesel it would have the 4.25. That is a non-turbo mid 80's diesel. I would wait until you blow that one up, or install an LSD to crack the case.

The eco diesel was a 91-92 jetta turbo diesel (had a k04 turbo instead of a t3, and a whopping 62hp!), and that transmission was the AVX, not the 4k.
Theres also the possibility that your speedo/tach are off a tick. I know the tach in my scirocco is a little wonky.

Sciroccos rock!!!
I have owned 3 of em...

The 4.25 was available in the AVX not the 4K. Is still think it was changed in my box though. I guess I ll have to wait and see to crack the box open...

"PGT cars #429 Verdier / Crouch, #110 Conley / Monks, #59 Moro / Rossey were checked for restrictor seals and marks. #429(1st PGT) and #110 (2nd PGT) were checked for 4th gear total ratio by marking and observing the crankshaft pulley while rolling the car forward one revolution of the (also marked) tires. Both Subaru WRXs were found to be compliant at 3.8 revolutions of the crankshaft to 1 revolution of the tires while in 4th gear."

I was going to kind of recommend the reverse of this. Lift the front of the car up off the ground and spin the crankshaft (the correct way) while the car is in a known gear (like 4th, which is often 1:1 or close to it) and count on the crankshaft and on the wheel. If you have an open diff you can just lift one side so the diff doesn't fuck with things.
