Single plate? huh? whachyoo talkin, mang?
Pics or ban

I started making "taco gussets", or boxed triangular gussest weled olong the sides of the tube (never in centerline) in about 88 and used 088/090 which was some dumb gauge. Thick enough to weld nicely, and about the limit for garage forming..
I still recommend that 099 or 090 or whatever the hell it is.

There's too much veribige and not enough drawings with arrows on them in this thread.

Pictures with circles and arrows with a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was?

Yeah, why not?
Force vectors are like first week Injur-near course reading.
So it's basic, and simple. But basic.. Bas-ic, base is=foundation
that upon which things are built.

Cursory or non-chalant thinking on the basics lead to a shaky construction, be it a proposition, and argument, or a cage.

And drawing with arrows---since evidently visualizing direction of force and the way force is resolved is too hard----helps.

So make that 8 x 10 color glossies.

Those Hinkelsteins are pretty unforgiving - perfect example for sill bar protection.

Looks to hit just behind the base of the B pillar, not the door; that is a good spot to hit. But many of our wrecks are cases of "wow, just missed a bad spot by 1'...." That can work against you or for you, so yes, sill bars = good. The 'deaf one'...that's good.....

Jumping back a bit, I do recall someone saying once that they do not want to use sill bars in WRC cars because they are too easily damaged being so low and had in the past led to cars not being allowed to continue after hitting things like stumps in GB and banging up the sill.

I've never seen that NASCAR style/x-bar on a rally car. Only road course cars. Makes sense but it would be awfully heavy IMO.

That cage above was built by Costas Galimas* of GTI race cars. He also built Stepen Verdier's rally cross Subarus.

For hours of amusement ask the Original Dave Clark about the truley revolutionary discoveries that were revealed when he was silly enough to ask for Chief Technical Kahuna.

And Sean, what happened to your "Oafish-al location" in your signature?

Got it all fixed up for ya.

Purely for amusement the car above received those revised door bars after this accident last year.

I think someone with a Golf rally car did that as well when the rule about gutted doors hit the market.
This is a way to have a gutted door and more cage side protection. Especially if you have a carbon door or something stupid for rallying.

Stephan built his is rallycross car. GTI did some updates later, like re-inforce the front end and install. His work looked really nice!
