XR4Ti blower box
September 04, 2012 12:10PM
If anyone has one of the non-ac blowers for the xr installed, or have seen what it is supposed to look like... I need pictures or a good description to figure out the direction I'm going...

I deleted the A/C in my XR and as part of that, I am finally getting around to removing the core in the blower box. But, there is a Euro blower box that does not have the core in it, so I purchased one. I started looking at actually doing the swap instead of letting parts sit on the bench in the garage and I think I'm missing some pieces for a installing this thing in stock method.

I have the blower, which has the gasket for the firewall and bolts up to the two studs on the near-horizontal part of the firewall, but I think I need a shroud of some type. I don't really see how to adapt (cleanly) the original "blower box," so I'm at a halt.

Pics/mockery/tips?

Lemme know what you find cause I'm sitting on 2-3 of the buggers and kinda baffled too.

John, I was really hoping you would be the one with a proper answer on this...

Worst case scenario, I'm not afraid of bending a little sheet tin to make this work. I can always rattle can it to look 'nice.'

I just haven't had an empty car or the time to screw wif it. The blue Xratty street car did have a dead blower but i had only time to swap in a fresh cause it was late Fall and froggy and needed the car immediately.
Put some piccies up.

I also have one to go in my car, started the install, and decided it was too much work to do it properly. The stock box is quite light once you gut it, won't let water get in, and allows you to shut off air flow if you leave the recirc stuff in. That is the big difference, the euro cars did not have the re-circ stuff is my guess, so you need to block off the large opening. Not worth it IMHO

I've been searching ebay uk and uk forums for info on this with no headway yet. I thought by looking at it that the oe shroud for the non-ac cars probably had re-circ and vent. Gutting the ac box may be the route I take, but I need to do more homework on this before I make a decision.

Sean, did you seal the holes from the ac core or leave them open?

I have no clue what you guys are talking about. Post some pics maybe?

I have a blower motor outside the car and a box that contains the heater core inside the car. Are you talking about a different piece outside the car or new pieces in both locations?

Interesting.
Mine looks like the one on the left, but I think I just cut the shit out of a stock on to get it to work.
I also didn't worry about filtering air before it came into the blowers or where it was getting that air from. I was just happy to have air. smiling smiley

Grant: While your option seems to be the cheap route, in my mind, the effectiveness can be judged by the question: How does it fare while battling old man winter?

Re: XR4Ti blower box

I don't know if I drove it at all during the winter.
I should also point out that I had a non-stock cowl made from a single piece of plastic so there wasn't really any venting above it.
As long as the motor (which is in center) isn't getting soaked it should be okay right? I had through about just using plastic weld JB weld type stuff to give mold a piece of tubing onto it that could then use a piece of tubing to go up and get fresh air from somewhere. I just never got around to it.
I would think a turn down would probably suffice to keep most water from going into it?

Seems like a lot of trouble for little benefit. I just gutted the stock box (its really light after you remove the AC parts) and plugged all the undesirable holes and reinstalled it. I haven't had any issues with water getting in the car even driving in a few down pours. My cowl, etc. is still intact so it pulls in air just like it did before it was a rally car.

My cowl was in pieces once anyone touched it, like most things plastic on the car, and removing the blower motor took so little time that I don't even remember doing it. Then again, I probably just attacked it with a pneumatic body saw and sheet metal sheers.
