Car Rotissserie..Anyone seen this before?
September 30, 2012 08:57PM
Hey guys... I stumbled upon this the other day when I was searching to find some rotisserie plans, seemed very cool how simple it was at first, but has anyone tried this before? Just looking for some input before I have my car fall onto its side while not even being in a ditch...

Yeah, I built a tip-tisserie from those plans for my VW.

With the cage in, it's a bit much for one person to tip up, but it worked great to tip it and strip the underbody, seam weld, and weld backing plates for the harnesses.

After I built it, I cut some off the tops of the side rests to get it a bit more angled, just to make sure it didn't fall back over.

Carl, you might want to move your rotation closer to the centerline of the car...that far over is going to take a lot of effort to get it off the ground.

We've used 2 harbor freight engine stands with an extra foot or so welded in. Def need a few people around when the car gets rotated, but once in place, seemed reasonably stable.

We found this method to be about 1/2" too short for the hatchback compact (scratched up the back edge of the roof a bit), but for traditional cars with a trunk, it'd probably be just fine.

Funny thing, that thread was started by me. But I ended up just building my own. Bit over $100 in steel and I could do 100% rotation of the car with full adjustment's available for any other car I could want to put on it.

I havnt gotten that far yet, progress has kind of halted for the last month since the new little one got here. But, since I'm working on a dirt floor I could always dig down so that it rolls downhill when I go to flip it up.

Really either will work. If Josh Wimpey can chime in, I'm pretty sure they just flipped their car on it's side onto some tires and other soft stuff to do all the underbody work on their new VW.

Just don't do what this guy did...

Yeah, he should have tipped the truck the other way so that he was working in the shade!
