Merkur rear brake upgrade
March 30, 2007 12:29PM
So as we all know, John is quickly getting the front brake stuff done. It occured to me after looking at the hats, that the probability of the hats working in the rear without using some crazy bracket was probably small. Got to talking with a friend and fellow racer and doing a bunch of measuring in my spare time designing a custom bracket to use mostly off the shelf parts in a rear brake upgrade. Sent some parts down to him and here's what he sent back.

You can see the WJ bracket with 7/16-20 pressed in mount for the caliper on the ground. We have to rotate the caliper up to 12 o clock to clear the STA and thus the caliper will have to be unbolted to bleed. Probably should have used a caliper on a 5.25" center instead of a 3.5" but we liked this caliper more. It is 4X1.25 piston NDL. Rotor is 11.125X0.865" with .420 air gap. New caliper mount is being made at the waterjet shop now and I'll post some pics with complete stuff very soon.

Grant I'm leaning toward Compomotive wheels to solve my clearance problems. What backspacing do your wheels have, what's the top hat offset, and how much clearance is left with those super wide NDL calipers? Thanks.

I think it's like 2.985" + 3/16" ish to the back of the caliper mount plate from the mount face of the hub.

Offset of my wheels are somewhere around 30-35 negative depending upon which of my three sets of Compomotives you look at. But I have 2.5" length studs and have 1" spacers if I end up needing them.

When you get it all together could you measure the caliper clearance? The NDL is just about the widest caliper Wilwood makes because it takes such thick pads. I'm curious how much clearance there is and where. Thanks.

Yeah can't imagine why they'd choose that over the plain Superlite with 4 x 1.25 pistons??
But what da fuck do I know, eh?

Will do Tim. The new caliper mount should be here next week and I'll get it on shortly after that and measure.

Of course, I have a fairly deep offset hat so right away my caliper is deeper in. The custom mount on the rear STA brings the shock a little further out so I needed spacers for the wheels and have to have spacers up front to clear the shock anyhow, so I'm really not too worried about clearance in the rear.

NDL was chosen because it has more pad I believe. We'd have to ask Todd why he felt that was a better choice for the project, but I trust someone who's job is designing and building race and aftermarket brake upgrade packages.

So Tim, like I was saying, the hat offset is so large that there isn't anywhere near any clearance issues. Fit's fine with 17 and 15 Compomotives. Didn't have the long studs to fully put on the 15s though with the wheel spacer, but there's tons of space everywhere.
