XR4Ti cam choices
December 06, 2012 11:07AM
For an XR rally build, is the stock cam sufficient or is there a 'preferred' grind. Yes I know that asking 'which is best' is a bad question AND a can of worms, but this leads me to my reason for asking:

I have an A236 sitting on the shelf, but don't know if I should use it or sell it.

Any advice on this?

I really don't know much about rally cars or motors but I think Sean M had one of them cams in his and I "yelled at him for a year" so he went back to the stocker and said "yeah it pulls better-er".

Sell it, buy goodies that you need... you'll make millions!

I would like to try out some of the Bo Port cams.
Also John, wasn't Sean on a Ranger Roller previously?
Most of the cams on the market for these are designed for NA circle track, drag racing or dyno queens so may not meet the requirements of a nice big long powerband.
I do think some of the lower spec Bo Port ones may hold some promise.

Stock seems to be about the best powerband I can think of.. espeially for a gravel car with a relatively wide ratio box, especially a motor where the motor must pull from near idle (like when you are off the gas and on the brakes).
His was a A237 or whatever the common thing was... some shit..now its gooder-er.

As John said, I had an A237 in the car, it was good, definitely was a top end cam. I have gone back to a Ranger roller, and by far that is my favorite setup. It makes GOBS of torques from 2500rpm, and will pull cleanly all the way to the rev limiter. Mine does come on pretty hard though, I am working on getting the gear based boost settings dialed in.

My Ford powered Volvo has a stock cam, and 18psi, and it too pulls pretty dam good.

Well, looks like I've got an a236 cam for sale. I'll throw it in the pile of stuff to photograph and post.

Thanks guys!

It sounds like the Boport 1.1 would be pretty sweet. Boport claims 15hp over a ranger roller and a better low end. But for $400....ouch. Granted, its not the a236 but Boport himself is also quoted as saying,

"....the A237 is worth a few HP at factory cam timing over the RR. Retard the ranger roller 4-6* and it will whoop on an A237. I can't quote track feedback, but the dyno showed just that when we were messing with cam development." (3/11/12)

Other engine modifications may make or break cam performance too and the dyno results probably weren't on a 100% stock engine. I've read where other people claim a 30hp gain from the ranger roller to the 1.1 but I personally wouldn't expect that.

$400. and since he Boport will never say any timing figures (Intake opens x BTDC intake closes X ABDC, lobe separation, duration @ 050) or anything, screw it.
I helped the guy locally who was grinding his cams for years---till he got a job with health care insurance and overyime pay ----and he said he could say if we asked since he was on good terms when he left. but what bullshit that you can't even get rudimentary numbers.
$400, I want numbers. no numbers no deal.

Stock is fine. If you open the throttle and hold it open.
