Volvo axle for my Corolla......
December 12, 2012 10:06AM
So I am going to start the hunt for a Volvo 1031 rear axle so I can begin surgery on the ol' rally bucket. What years 740/240 should I be looking for?

Was planning on an equal length trailing arm setup when this swap occurs. Thoughts?

Any other details are appreciated!

240, get a 2 forty not 7forty

Width is different on the 747 K-car Grandpa series..

Ya oughtta ask John Reed out here in Portland is he's going to shit or get off the pot on if he's converting to 240 front knuckles cause if he does, which would be smrat cause he's driving hard and that 2.0 motor is heavier than thought, then maybe

MAYBEEEEEEE you could swap the stock Volvo axle shafts for his modded 4 on 4 1/2" ones. and he copuld go Volvo front and rear..

Unless of course you wanna go Volvo 240 knuckle in front, too.

Oh thanks! didn't realize there was a width difference but now I don't have to worry about measurements.

I had planned on running Volvo wheels in the rear, (ballin on a budget) but I might look into that.

Still a little unclear as to which year axle to go for. I would like to get a ring and pinion with a ratio lower than what any of the 240s were orginally equipped with but everything I read says that low ratio ring and pinions are not compatible with diffs that had higher ratio gears orginally.

Guess I just need to pull the cover at the junkyard and determine the ratio myself unless anyone has better ideas.

You also want a Dana 30 (1030) not the 1031. The ring gear is oddball in the 1031 and you won't be able to find aftermarket gear sets

Ok that is really good info then, I know how to differentiate between 1030 and 1031 so that part should be easy. As long as I can get whatever ratio ring and pinion I want. My plan is to weld the diff, LSD is out of the budget right now.

I will probably just leave this car alone, and maintain what I have. Overall works fine and I have a ton of wheels for it. Haven't broken one of those beefed up JVL fortified 'Yota knuckles yet (and hopefully actually have a full spare set this year).

Next car, the exact path is yet to be determined........... smiling smiley

Next car just get a 240 Volvo, it's just a bigger Corolla with a really nice basic motor that has endless potential n.a. or turbo. Simpler and 40 to 1 ratio in the junk yards for all those "wear items" like hoods and grills and fenders and doors and glass. And they sold them thru '92 so 75 thru 92 gives you a lot more chances of finding stuff.
And no problem that its bigger, that's fine on any North American roads.

Early wagon manual had 4.1 later wagon had 3.73. Early like pre 1980. Lot of the sedans had 3.73

I agree with this. If I wasn't into old Corollas, these would be on top of the list of cars I might start playing with.

I really don't care what the ratio is, I plan to go much lower but that is useful info. 4.1 would be lower than what I have now.

Yeah that is always a possibility. Or an XRatty but I would want it to look just like Sean's and wouldn't want to just straight up copy him (but his is so sick that you can't hardly blame someone for doing it). I do love my old Toyotas though, especially the Corolla. Nice, basic engine is probably smart but I don't always find that to be the most interesting path for me to take.

Clearly thread hijacking isn't against Rally Anarchy policy!winking smiley

Now I have questions. What is an X-ratty and aren't those old Escort engines in the picture?

Lookie, conversations in the real world ebb and flow and naturally evolve. Only in the E-world originally only inhabited by too many a-social and anti-social; you know the Hollywood stereotype nerd, only worse....
These poor creatures --nobody paid any attention to them since they were like Turrete's syndrome social-retards, so email-Lists began, they could "administer" lists and then forums and these 99.7% of the time utterly useless individuals got to be "MODERATORS" and could yell at people for "that's off-topic'.
Which in the real world would get them socially shunned, or kicked in the nuts---if they had any.

We're not like the others.....(heh...he heh....heh<---said with sickest perv chuckle.)

An "Xratty" is what a ex-wife of mine like 25 years ago called he bosses' "XR4Ti".. From a short distance the 4 can look like a A and she was saying "Oh my boss got one of those "Xratties" you like"....
I had no idea what it was she was talking about---till I dropped he off to work one night...
She "Oh Xratty sounds better than Maaaarrrre-Koooooooor Ex Are Foour Teee Eye eye EYE" with that cute accent

So XR4Ti became "Xratty"..and that makes logical sense..many are bought 3 rd hand, something simple happens and they sit and s=don't run and deteriorate and get 'ratty'....then we buy 'em build 'em spiff 'em up and nthey're better than before, and no longer
ratty, they're formerly ratty---Ex-ratty..

And no those aren't 'old Escort" engines, they fully rebuilt Ford Cosworth YBB sold from m.y.1987thru 1991 in 2wd Ford Sierra Cosworth cars..
With a thicker mainline in the block and more material in the stressed parts of the heads they were called YBG and we found from 1990 in Sierra Cosworth 4x4 and from 1993 m.y. in the "shortened" Sierra called Escort Cosworth...also 4x4.

The photo is just downstairs.. I build engines....and like the Xratties --which is the only version of Sierra we got in USA/Canada... search around here there's millions of photos of building the cars and what can be done..

Ahhhhh, right right. Thats the car I had pictured in my head but not being exposed to those cars I always say "Escort"

Very glad these threads can go where they flow, makes for some better learning.

Something tells me it's going to take some time to learn all the slang you guys toss around. Maybe a thread like "Guide to Rally Anarchy Language" is in order.
