Oil Cooler Hoses
April 15, 2007 06:51PM
So I scored some gigantic 34 row oil cooler off ebay for $35. Its got -8 fittings on it already and I need some lines for it. I think the fittings on the sandwhich plate are pipe thread.
So I was thinking of using some of this hose: http://www.stockcarproducts.com/aqp14.htm
and using -8 fittings on one side and npt (or whatever is on the sandwhich plate) on the other end. Then I wouldnt need any adapters or anything.
So does anyone have anything to say about using the hose with fittings that have nipple ends held on by hose clamps? They shouldnt really see much over 90psi ever and be much cheaper than all the blingin AN fittings and stainless braided fancy pants lines.
Yay, nay?

DOOOOOoooooooooOOOOOODD. That's huge.
Have you thunk that the poooooooor ol' oil pump will have to work hard to push oil thru the lines amd the big cooler, and that that will cost you oil pressure (pumping losses) to do so?????

Suggest this: Sell it on Ebay for $1,000,000. Then get something more correctly sized like say Volvo oil cooler or maybe max Jag 6 oil cooler.

Normally we want to make things easier for the pump so we go to LARGER lines.
Think of when you've drunk A LOT of BEER.
Eventually you're done renting it and ya gotta get rid of it, so you whip it out and you get ready to write CARL in the snow.
How much easier is it on your system if you just let loose like a firehose and think of the strain if you try squeeezing it hard.

Oil system is the same.
-10 is mo better.

Look you can get STEEL Push on that function the same as those you linked to and they cost 1/3. Check "Weatherhead"'s catalog, or PARKER.
Make sure the hose you get is rated for continuous 300F

How much would you guestimate that you could make 2 36" hoses for using your method?
There are more nascar take-off lines on ebay and I could get 2 with the fancy pants aeroquip AN fittings and nomex sleeves for $50.

I may have accidentally just bought a volvo oil cooler on ebay for $55.

I like the hose that you can get at NAPA that has 2 stainless braided layers under an outer fabric layer. You can get brass push-on AN/ ends for a few $$ each, and you REALLY have to work to push them on and they don't come off. You can pull a battlship with this hose.

If you have aromte oil filter inline with any cooler, then I tend to agree with JOhn; for a typical 2L 4 cylinder, you don't need a huge cooler.

I found some hose thats not too much, and its designed for high temp oil lines.
I got my volvo oil cooler in the mail too. Now I just gotta figure out what kind of fitings are on it and my sandwhich plate so I can get the appropriate ends for the hoses. Thats item #742,374 on my list of 1 million things to do on the car.

Ok so I found some ends in a box of parts that happen to fit the cooler and sandwhich plate. Go figure. So I just need hose and to mount the cooler. Then my oil will be cool, just like me.
